Acclaimed novelist ("Americanah") whose essays and talks offer sharp critiques of culture and feminism.

Veteran Chinese director Zhang Yimou has revealed that the cinematic adaptation of the globally acclaimed science fiction novel, 'The Three-Body Problem', is still in its script-polishing phase, a process that has spanned multiple years. Speaking at the Busan International Film Festival, where he presided over the competition jury, Zhang emphasized the inherent challenges in transforming Liu Cixin's complex narrative into a film. His remarks underscore the meticulous effort being poured into the project to meet the high anticipations of both the original work's vast readership and contemporary film audiences.

During a dialogue with festival director Jung Hanseok, Zhang Yimou, who is known for his prolific career, confirmed that he is actively engaged in developing a new cinematic venture. He shared insights from recent discussions with fellow directors, highlighting the escalating difficulty in producing a truly exceptional film in today's dynamic industry. This sentiment particularly applies to 'The Three-Body Problem', a narrative beloved by millions worldwide.

Zhang articulated his deep appreciation for 'The Three-Body Problem', recognizing it as a monumental work within the science fiction genre. However, he candidly admitted to the formidable obstacles encountered during its adaptation for film, which has necessitated an extended period of script refinement. The director expressed his earnest desire that the final product will not only live up to audience expectations but also deliver a satisfying cinematic experience. The ongoing revisions reflect a commitment to faithfully capturing the essence of the novel while ensuring its viability as a motion picture.

The extensive popularity of Liu Cixin's 'Remembrance of Earth's Past' trilogy, which began with 'The Three-Body Problem' winning the Hugo Award in 2015, has already led to several adaptations. These include an animated series by Bilibili in 2022, a live-action series by Tencent in 2023, and Netflix's '3 Body Problem' in 2024. The varying interpretations across different media platforms further accentuate the complexity and divergent audience expectations surrounding the source material.

Jung Hanseok pointed out the mixed reactions of excitement and apprehension that arose when Zhang Yimou's involvement in the project was announced. Zhang recounted directing his team to monitor online feedback, which yielded approximately 400,000 comments within a single week. He observed a prevailing sense of concern among the public, indicating that audiences hold filmmakers to increasingly high standards. The director attributed this heightened critical discernment to the proliferation of visual media, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence, which has empowered audiences with greater analytical capabilities. This understanding reinforces the immense pressure on the production team to deliver a film that resonates deeply and avoids disappointing its eager viewers.

Zhang further stated his intention to carefully consider audience preferences and insights during the ongoing development process, aiming to strike the right chord with the eventual release. Expanding on this point to a broader assembly of filmmakers at the festival, he mused on the universal ambition to create a masterpiece. He acknowledged the elusive nature of a 'great film', suggesting that from a Chinese perspective, it often arises from a fortunate convergence of diligent effort and serendipity. Regardless of the role of luck, Zhang affirmed that the enduring passion and affection for cinema will continue to fuel the creative endeavors of artists.
