For years, fans have eagerly awaited The Elder Scrolls 6, an expectation fueled by its announcement at E3 2018 and the subsequent silence. Instead, Bethesda ventured into a new cosmic frontier with Starfield. This strategic pivot, however, wasn't universally anticipated within the studio, as highlighted by a key figure from Skyrim's development.

Bethesda's Unexpected Trajectory: From Tamriel to the Stars

Kurt Kuhlmann, a veteran designer who contributed significantly to Bethesda's acclaimed titles, including writing the main questline for Oblivion and co-leading Skyrim's design, recently shared insights into the studio's decision-making process. Kuhlmann, who departed from Bethesda in 2023, revealed that the overwhelming sentiment among developers was that The Elder Scrolls 6 would be the immediate successor to Fallout 4. This expectation, rooted in the studio's historical development patterns, was disrupted by an unforeseen directive.

During an interview with Frvr, Kuhlmann recounted the surprise many felt when Todd Howard, the influential game director and executive producer, championed the development of Starfield. According to Kuhlmann, Howard presented the idea of a new space-themed intellectual property to the team, declaring, "Guess what, team? We're making this space game." This bold move, reportedly approved by ZeniMax, Bethesda's parent company, marked a significant departure from the anticipated development path.

Starfield's reception upon release was a mixed bag. While ambitious, it faced criticism for its somewhat generic setting, repetitive procedurally generated planets, and visuals that many found to be slightly outdated. The game's performance at The Game Awards and its less-than-stellar reviews on platforms like Steam, especially when compared to the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 released in the same year, underscored the challenges it faced. Kuhlmann himself admitted to a personal preference for working on The Elder Scrolls 6 over Fallout 76 and Starfield, a sentiment he believed was shared by the majority of the development team.

This narrative aligns with previous accounts from former Bethesda employees, who have described Howard as a formidable creative force within the studio. Character artist Dennis Mejillones, for instance, drew parallels between Howard and George Lucas, suggesting that some within Bethesda were hesitant to challenge his creative vision. Kuhlmann's departure, reportedly linked to being denied a lead role on The Elder Scrolls 6, further emphasizes the strong influence Howard wielded in shaping the studio's project pipeline.

The revelation sheds light on the internal dynamics of game development at a major studio, illustrating how personal vision and corporate strategy can intertwine to dictate the creative direction of highly anticipated titles. While Starfield has carved out its niche, the enduring wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 continues, leaving fans and, evidently, some former developers, pondering what might have been.

This candid glimpse into Bethesda's development choices highlights the complex interplay of creative leadership, studio expectations, and market demands in the gaming industry. It serves as a reminder that even in the creation of beloved franchises, the path forward is rarely straightforward. For players, the wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 continues, perhaps with a newfound understanding of the journey that led to Starfield's unexpected arrival.
