In a significant strategic move to reinvigorate its acclaimed newsmagazine, CBS' '60 Minutes' has brought on board a fresh roster of correspondents and contributors. This expansion is designed to inject new perspectives and deepen the program's investigative journalism, signaling a new era under recent leadership changes.

'60 Minutes' Bolsters Ranks with Prominent Journalists and Authors

New York, NY – On July 28, 2026, the iconic CBS news program '60 Minutes' officially unveiled its latest additions to the on-air team. Esteemed 'New York Times' columnist Ross Douthat has been appointed as a correspondent, while renowned author Sebastian Junger, celebrated for 'The Perfect Storm,' and Vice News veteran Gianna Toboni will join as contributors. Furthermore, Norah O'Donnell, a familiar face who has contributed to the show for several years, is set to take on a more prominent role. Trevor Phillips, already a senior global affairs correspondent for CBS News, will also lend his expertise as a contributor.

These strategic hires were announced by the program's new executive producer, Nick Bilton, in an internal memo on Tuesday. Bilton's appointment in May, orchestrated by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, marked a substantial restructuring for '60 Minutes.' This overhaul included the departure of the show's former executive producer and correspondents Cecila Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi. Bilton had previously articulated his vision for a more "gonzo journalism" approach, seeking specialists who are "the best in their field, incredible storytellers, incredible investigators, fearless."

The announcement follows a period of notable internal challenges, including a widely reported incident where veteran correspondent Scott Pelley voiced strong criticisms of Bilton and Weiss in a staff meeting, leading to his termination. The remaining correspondents reportedly considered resigning but ultimately decided to stay, emphasizing their commitment to the legacy and survival of '60 Minutes' despite their reservations about the new leadership structure. With new episodes typically premiering in September, the program is now in a race against time to prepare for the upcoming fall season, aiming to showcase its revitalized team and refreshed editorial direction.

The integration of diverse voices like Ross Douthat, known for his incisive commentary, and Sebastian Junger, celebrated for his immersive storytelling, suggests a deliberate effort to broaden the program's thematic scope and appeal. This strategic pivot, while born from internal shifts, offers an exciting prospect for viewers to engage with more varied and deeply investigated narratives. The commitment of the existing team, despite recent turmoil, underscores the enduring importance of '60 Minutes' in the landscape of American journalism, hinting at a renewed focus on impactful storytelling as the program navigates its evolving identity.
