In a powerful move to address a critical issue facing many in the entertainment industry, acclaimed actor Cheyenne Jackson has initiated a public awareness campaign, 'One Job Away,' leveraging his significant social media presence to advocate for fellow performers on the brink of losing their vital SAG-AFTRA health benefits. This initiative sheds light on the precarious nature of maintaining health coverage in a demanding profession, where even established talents can find themselves just one project short of eligibility.

Bridging the Gap: How a Single Role Can Secure Futures

The Precipice of Losing Health Benefits

Cheyenne Jackson, a familiar face from numerous television series and films, openly shared his personal experience of almost forfeiting his SAG-AFTRA health insurance. Despite a career spanning over 40 TV shows and several movies, he found himself falling short of the annual income requirement of approximately $28,000 necessary to maintain coverage for himself, his husband, and their children. This personal struggle illuminated a systemic vulnerability within the industry.

A Lifeline from a Legendary Colleague

Faced with this daunting challenge, Jackson reached out to his friend and veteran actress Kathy Bates. Needing to secure an additional $6,000 in earnings, he inquired about any potential roles on her show, 'Matlock.' Bates' swift and supportive response, securing him a small but crucial part as an unnamed detective, served as a pivotal moment, highlighting the importance of community and solidarity among performers.

Launching the 'One Job Away' Movement

Inspired by his own experience and the support he received, Jackson launched the 'One Job Away' campaign on Instagram. The initiative involves posting headshots and biographies of actors who are struggling to meet their SAG-AFTRA health insurance minimums. With over 741,000 followers, Jackson's platform quickly became a beacon of hope, receiving hundreds of submissions within its first 24 hours.

Critiquing the System's Shortcomings

Jackson's campaign aims to ignite a broader conversation about the structural issues within the SAG-AFTRA system, particularly concerning residuals and the annual re-qualification for health benefits. He points out that current residual structures often don't contribute adequately to SAG dues, effectively forcing actors to "start over every year" in their quest for health coverage, regardless of prior earnings.

Stories of Struggle and the Call for Change

The campaign has brought to the forefront poignant stories of actors like Juston Graber, who was just under $200 short of qualifying, and Miho Saito, needing only $402 more. Notable figures such as Independent Spirit Award nominee Trace Lysette, Jai Rodriguez, and Daniel Franzese have also been featured, illustrating that this struggle affects a wide range of talents. The initiative has even garnered support from major industry figures, with Jamie Lee Curtis reposting several of Jackson's posts to her millions of followers.

Seeking Solutions, Not Blame

While acknowledging the frustrations expressed by others, such as 'Drake & Josh' actor Drake Bell, who publicly criticized the union after losing his benefits, Jackson emphasizes that his campaign is not about assigning blame. Instead, he seeks to foster a constructive dialogue to find solutions, asserting that "the system is not working right now" and a collective effort is needed to address these critical issues for the acting community.
