Cinépolis Distribution, a major global exhibitor, has secured the Latin American rights for the Spanish thriller '5 More Minutes,' starring San Sebastian Best Supporting Actor Javier Cámara. This acquisition highlights Cinépolis's strategic focus on strengthening Mexican cinema, aiming to release 12 domestic films annually and even participate in their development. Despite a general recovery in theater attendance following the pandemic, Mexican films still struggle to reclaim their pre-pandemic market share, largely due to a shift in audience viewing habits towards streaming platforms for local content. Nevertheless, Cinépolis is proactively launching new films, including Jonas Cuarón's 'Campeón Gabacho' and several genre features, while also expanding its international presence through cultural initiatives.

Cinépolis is navigating a dynamic landscape, balancing global film acquisitions with a dedicated effort to revitalize its domestic market. The company’s commitment extends to expanding its theatrical footprint globally, albeit with a more selective approach to new screen installations. CEO Alejandro Ramirez remains optimistic about the future of cinema, viewing the pandemic as a "stress test" that the industry has overcome. International collaborations, such as the agreement with Unifrance to extend the French Film Tour, further emphasize Cinépolis's ambition to cultivate new audiences and promote Mexican cinema on a global scale, inspired by successful initiatives in other countries.

Cinépolis' Strategic Expansion and Support for Local Cinema

Cinépolis Distribution, a significant player in the global exhibition market, has made a notable move by acquiring Latin American rights for '5 More Minutes' ('5 Minutos Más'), a Spanish time-warping thriller featuring Javier Cámara, who recently received the Best Supporting Actor award at the San Sebastian Film Festival. This acquisition is a testament to Cinépolis's dedication to boosting Mexican cinema, a sector it aims to support by increasing its annual slate of domestic films to a dozen, occasionally getting involved from the development stage. Miguel Rivera, Cinépolis VP of global programming and content, emphasizes the film's potential for broad appeal, signaling a departure from their usual focus on Mexican-only acquisitions. This strategy is part of a larger effort to curate a diverse selection of fresh and original films across various genres, recognizing the evolving tastes of the audience and the need for compelling content.

The company's commitment to Mexican cinema is particularly relevant as it confronts shifting audience behavior in the post-pandemic era. While overall cinema attendance has bounced back, local productions have yet to fully recover their market share, which currently hovers around 3% to 4% compared to 10% pre-pandemic. This decline is largely attributed to audiences becoming accustomed to watching Mexican films, particularly comedies, on streaming services rather than in theaters. Cinépolis is countering this trend by strategically releasing new films, such as Jonas Cuarón’s ‘Campeón Gabacho,’ which is set for a wide release across Mexico and Central America. Additionally, they are bolstering their genre offerings with films like Andrés Beltrán’s 'El diablo sabe tu nombre' and Rigoberto Castañeda’s 'Return to Me' ('Regresa'), aiming to draw diverse audiences back to the big screen. These efforts underscore a proactive approach to rebuilding and expanding the audience for Mexican films, recognizing the challenges posed by changing consumption habits.

Global Market Leadership and Future Outlook

Cinépolis is making significant strides in the global cinema market, demonstrating resilience and strategic growth following the widespread disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the necessity of closing some locations, the company is now steadily expanding its network, albeit with a more discerning approach, opening approximately 60 to 70 new screens worldwide annually, a more measured pace compared to the 300 screens per year before the pandemic. This selective expansion strategy reflects a focus on quality and profitability in chosen markets. Furthermore, Cinépolis has solidified its position as a global leader in terms of admissions, outperforming competitors like AMC and China’s Wanda in ticket sales. In 2025, Cinépolis reported 256.4 million admissions, surpassing AMC's 219.4 million and Wanda's 212.8 million. The company also leads in admissions per screen globally, with 37,417 compared to AMC’s 22,761 and Wanda’s 25,117, highlighting its operational efficiency and audience engagement.

Looking ahead, Cinépolis remains optimistic about the cinema industry’s future, with plans for new cinemas extending through 2029. CEO Alejandro Ramirez views the pandemic as the ultimate stress test that the industry successfully endured, reinforcing his belief in the enduring appeal of the communal movie-going experience. This optimism is further fueled by international collaborations and initiatives aimed at cultivating new audiences. Ramirez's participation in the Lumière Summit, where he interacted with French President Emmanuel Macron and his South Korean counterpart Lee Jae Myung, underscores the high-level recognition of cinema's cultural importance. Inspired by France's 'My Class at the Cinema' program, Cinépolis is dedicated to similar visual literacy and audience development efforts. A landmark agreement with Unifrance will see the French Film Tour, a program that has already reached millions in Mexico, expand to Spain, India, Indonesia, and Chile by 2027, demonstrating Cinépolis's ambition to not only bring international cinema to new audiences but also to export Mexican films to global markets, including Europe.
