Danny Boyle on AI, Thatcher, and the Future of Film

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

During the 70th BFI London Film Festival, esteemed director and producer Danny Boyle offered insights into his new film, 'Ink,' which chronicles Rupert Murdoch's early career on Fleet Street and his acquisition of The Sun tabloid. Boyle candidly discussed his past, including an uneventful meeting with Murdoch following the success of 'Slumdog Millionaire,' which was financially beneficial for Fox Searchlight. This segment of his conversation with Matt Belloni from Puck is also featured on Belloni's podcast, 'The Town.'

Boyle further elaborated on his perspective regarding artificial intelligence in filmmaking, describing it as an indispensable tool for visual effects. He emphasized that in 'Ink,' AI was utilized judiciously to enhance, rather than replace, human elements. A notable application of this technology was in recreating the likeness of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for certain scenes. Boyle explained his decision not to seek permission from her estate, believing that historical figures' influence on society should be open to artistic interpretation without requiring familial consent.

Concluding his reflections, Boyle addressed the evolving landscape of media and technology, expressing concern about the potential for tech giants to dominate information platforms. He raised questions about the preservation of journalistic integrity in an era where traditional news outlets are waning and AI's role in journalism is expanding. On a lighter note, Boyle shared his recent cinematic preferences, mentioning his admiration for 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms,' and his anticipation for 'Dune 3.'

Danny Boyle's insights underscore the critical dialogue surrounding technological advancements in creative industries and their broader societal implications. His work on 'Ink' exemplifies a pioneering approach to historical storytelling, challenging conventional boundaries and encouraging a reevaluation of artistic freedom and accountability.
