Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2: A Decade-Long Journey Through Time and Combat

Dragon Ball enthusiasts recently received a wave of exciting news at the Games Battle Hour, including additional downloadable content for Dragon Ball Sparking Zero and a deeper look into Dragon Ball Super: Beerus. However, the most significant revelation was the official confirmation of Dragon Ball Project Age 1000 as Xenoverse 3, a title that had been hinted at earlier in the year. With Xenoverse 3 set for release in 2027, over a decade after its predecessor, it's timely to revisit Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, a game that has maintained a dedicated player base since its 2016 launch and is soon to exit Xbox Game Pass.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 distinguishes itself by offering a fresh perspective on the established Dragon Ball narrative. Players assume the role of a custom-created Time Patroller, collaborating with Trunks to safeguard the integrity of the timeline. The game features five distinct playable races, each possessing unique strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Saiyans, despite their lower health, boast powerful offensive capabilities and exclusive access to a wide array of transformations, such as Super Saiyan Blue and Beast form, enhancing their combat prowess significantly. This character customization, combined with the ability to influence pivotal events, provides a compelling and personalized journey within the Dragon Ball universe.

The combat system in Xenoverse 2, while perhaps not as intricate as Dragon Ball FighterZ, delivers an undeniably enjoyable experience. It incorporates all the expected elements of an arena fighter, including intricate melee combo chains, aerial chases, and a plethora of ki blasts. Players can fine-tune their created character's loadout, customizing their movesets and attributes to align with their preferred fighting style. Whether it's specializing in close-quarters combat with powerful strikes or overwhelming opponents with a barrage of ki attacks, the RPG mechanics are integral to the fun, allowing for diverse and engaging build experimentation.

A notable aspect of Xenoverse 2 is its willingness to playfully manipulate the series's chronology and continuity. Unlike Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which faithfully recreates the original story, Xenoverse 2 introduces non-canon movie villains as central figures and allows for unique battle scenarios, such as confronting both Vegeta and Nappa in their Great Ape forms simultaneously, or engaging Frieza and Cooler amidst a dramatically exploding Namek. This creative liberty with the timeline carves out a distinct identity for Xenoverse 2, setting it apart from other Dragon Ball games that adhere more strictly to the source material.

Beyond the main storyline, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 offers a wealth of content, including numerous side missions and an extensive collection of DLC. As the game prepares to leave Xbox Game Pass at the close of April, now is an opportune moment for new players to dive into its rich offerings or for existing fans to revisit its time-traveling escapades. For those who wish to ensure their adventures continue indefinitely, Xenoverse 2 is frequently available at discounted prices across various digital storefronts, inviting players to experience its unique blend of action, customization, and narrative innovation.
