Embracing Imperfection: A Path to Righteous Parenting

In a recent address, leaders from BYU-Pathway Worldwide emphasized the significance of preparing for imperfections in parenting. The discussion centered on acknowledging mistakes and utilizing them as opportunities for growth. Sister Melinda Ashton highlighted the importance of repentance and admitting errors to children, illustrating how this practice can foster trust and encourage children to seek help when they falter. Furthermore, the Ashtons presented practical strategies rooted in scripture for enhancing family dynamics and strengthening marital bonds among students.

Sister Ashton recounted her experiences as a parent, underscoring the value of admitting one's faults. By doing so, parents provide their children with tangible examples of repentance, reinforcing the belief that it is an integral part of personal development. This transparency not only strengthens familial relationships but also encourages children to emulate these behaviors. Additionally, the Ashtons outlined five scripture-based methods for parents to lead righteously within their homes, focusing on being exemplary role models, guiding children through truth and light, sharing spiritual testimonies, praying together, and cultivating a cohesive family culture.

President Brian Ashton complemented these insights by offering advice specifically aimed at married students to fortify their marriages. He recommended expressing love frequently, dedicating time for dates, engaging in physical touch like holding hands, sitting together, and prioritizing shared experiences. These actions, he explained, nurture intimacy and mutual understanding between partners.

A poignant moment in their presentation involved a miraculous event during a family vacation. President Ashton recounted an incident where their young son narrowly escaped injury after running into traffic. Thanks to a prior blessing from Sister Ashton’s father ensuring their safety, the boy was unharmed despite the perilous situation. This episode served as a powerful testament to divine intervention and the reality of God's presence in daily lives.

The message concluded with an emphasis on teaching children about their divine heritage. President Ashton stressed the importance of understanding that each individual is a spirit child of God, possessing inherent potential and access to divine assistance through prayer. Such knowledge empowers individuals to navigate life's challenges with faith and resilience, knowing they are never alone in their journey.
