European Direct Lending Market Sees Strong Rebound with Focus on Software Sector

The European direct lending sector is currently experiencing a notable revitalization. Recent data reveals an increase in both the number and projected value of deals within the European market. This upswing is marked by the first direct lending acquisition of a broadly syndicated loan since the third quarter of 2025, alongside sustained investment in the software industry.

Despite the current year's direct lending activity lagging behind 2025 figures, there is a clear trend of larger deals re-emerging. The direct lending market has shown resilience in its support for software enterprises, even as general market apprehension about this sector persists. This is exemplified by Dutch software firm Unit4, which recently restructured its syndicated term loan B through a consortium of direct lenders. Additionally, the number of borrowers shifting from direct loans to the broadly syndicated loan market for refinancing has surged, reaching its second-highest quarterly volume since data tracking began. This indicates an evolving interaction between the direct lending and broadly syndicated loan markets, with strong demand for syndicated loans driven by CLO issuance.

Looking ahead, the market demonstrates a complex interplay of factors. While median spreads on all transactions have seen a general decrease this year, certain borrowers face higher pricing, pushing the average spread to 529 basis points. This marks the first expansion in overall average spreads since data collection commenced. This dynamic suggests a nuanced pricing environment, particularly as software credits command a premium due to market uncertainties and a constrained pool of lenders. The sustained interest in software financing, coupled with the shift in refinancing strategies, highlights a dynamic and adaptable European direct lending landscape.

This period of growth and adaptation in the European direct lending market reflects a resilient financial ecosystem. The ability of lenders to innovate and respond to market demands, particularly in supporting high-growth sectors like software, is crucial for sustained economic prosperity. This proactive engagement fosters stability and provides essential capital for businesses to expand and thrive, ultimately contributing to a robust and dynamic economy.
