Families' Quest for Justice: A Documentary on Flight PS752 Tragedy

Guillermo del Toro

Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

Soran Mardookhi, a Kurdish-Canadian filmmaker, has directed a compelling documentary titled 'The Flight,' which delves into the tragic incident of Ukraine Airlines Flight PS752. This aircraft, which departed from Tehran in January 2020, was brought down by Iranian surface-to-air missiles, resulting in the loss of all 176 lives on board. Mardookhi emphasizes that his film transcends political discourse, focusing instead on the human element of the catastrophe. He aims to provide a platform for the families of the Iranian-Canadian victims, allowing them to narrate their own experiences and ongoing fight for truth.

The documentary spotlights how the Iranian-Canadian community, grappling with immense personal grief, established the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims. This collective endeavor empowered them to challenge the official narrative and demand accountability from Iranian authorities, asserting violations of international law. The film incorporates intimate home videos, showcasing the vibrant lives of those lost, from students and newlyweds to young children. Mardookhi illustrates how these individuals, many of whom sought new beginnings in Canada, had their dreams tragically cut short, emphasizing that their collective action emerged from a shared need for justice that individual efforts could not achieve.

Mardookhi, who migrated to Canada from Iranian Kurdistan in 2010, also reflects on his personal journey with censorship. Having previously produced films underground in Iran to circumvent state control, he recounts a pivotal moment during the filming of 'Turbulence' in Vancouver where he recognized his own internalized censorship. This realization led him to consciously use art as a narrative tool, rather than a means to bypass restrictions. 'The Flight' is set to premiere at the Vancouver Film Festival, offering a poignant and powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of profound adversity and the persistent pursuit of justice.

This film serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and validating personal suffering amidst geopolitical tragedies. It highlights the enduring strength of communities united by shared loss, advocating for transparency and justice, and underscores the role of art in giving voice to the silenced and holding power accountable, encouraging a hopeful future where truth ultimately prevails.
