Final Fantasy Celebrates 40 Years with Crystal Edition Soundtrack

Mathematician and game designer who created "Magic: The Gathering," revolutionizing collectible games.

Music has always been a fundamental element of the Final Fantasy universe, enriching its narrative and deepening player immersion since its debut in 1987. Across numerous main installments and spin-offs, the legendary role-playing game series has consistently utilized its musical compositions to underscore significant emotional moments and pivotal story developments. To honor its upcoming 40th anniversary, Square Enix has revealed a comprehensive soundtrack collection that promises to be an essential addition for fans.

The Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary Crystal Edition album is a meticulously curated soundtrack offered in both Vinyl and CD formats. This collection will feature musical selections spanning all sixteen core games in the series, with its release slated for January 6, 2027. The official promotional website for the album emphasizes the profound impact of music within the franchise, stating that it has not only brought unforgettable scenes to life but has also forged lasting memories for generations of players, accompanying them through epic journeys, deep friendships, challenging battles, and poignant farewells.

Pre-orders for both the vinyl and CD editions are currently accessible via Square Enix's Japanese online store. The vinyl set, comprising two 12-inch records, is priced at 8,000 yen (approximately $51 USD) before tax, while the single-disc CD is available for 3,600 yen (around $23 USD) before tax. While these listings are not yet live, both versions are expected to become available soon on North American and European storefronts. The task of selecting a limited tracklist from such a vast and beloved musical catalog must have been challenging, given the difficulty of choosing just one standout track from each game, such as deciding between "Aerith's Theme" and "One-Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy 7. Yet, Square Enix has successfully curated a definitive collection that includes iconic pieces like "Main Theme" from the original Final Fantasy, "Rebel Army Theme" from Final Fantasy 2, "One-Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy 7, and "To Zanarkand" from Final Fantasy 10, among others, demonstrating a thoughtful and passionate selection process.

This special anniversary release not only commemorates the rich musical history of Final Fantasy but also stands as a testament to the power of artistic expression in gaming. The dedication of Square Enix to preserving and celebrating these iconic scores underscores the profound connection between music and storytelling, reminding us that art, in all its forms, is a timeless conduit for emotion, memory, and shared human experience.
