George Lucas, the visionary behind cinematic epics, candidly discusses the arduous 17-year endeavor to bring his $1 billion Lucas Museum of Narrative Art to fruition in Los Angeles. From navigating bureaucratic obstacles to confronting skepticism, Lucas reveals the profound personal challenges encountered during this ambitious project. Co-founded with his wife, Mellody Hobson, the museum is poised to open its doors to the public on September 22nd, promising a unique exploration of storytelling through art.

A Cinematic Visionary's Ultimate Test of Will

The Unexpected Difficulties in Realizing a Dream Project

George Lucas, the renowned filmmaker, recently disclosed the extensive struggles he faced in establishing his passion project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. He reflected on the arduous journey, spanning 17 years, which saw the project move through various cities before finally settling in Los Angeles. Lucas, known for tackling seemingly impossible feats, confessed that this particular endeavor severely tested his resolve, admitting it "almost broke my will."

Overcoming External Obstacles and Skepticism

The 82-year-old creator highlighted his inherent nature as a contrarian, drawn to challenges others deem unattainable. He found immense satisfaction in pursuing goals that were met with doubt, even when the eventual success was still questioned. The path to the museum's creation was fraught with bureaucratic delays and differing opinions, a testament to Lucas's perseverance in overcoming continuous hurdles.

A New Landmark for Los Angeles: Design and Scale

Scheduled to welcome visitors on September 22, the approximately $1 billion museum, a collaborative effort with his wife, business executive Mellody Hobson, is strategically located in Exposition Park, adjacent to the University of Southern California, Lucas's alma mater. The final selection of Los Angeles in 2017 followed earlier failed attempts to build in San Francisco and Chicago, which were plagued by disagreements over site and architectural plans. The construction phase itself, initiated in 2018, was further complicated by the global pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions.

Architectural Marvel and Public Spaces

Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects in collaboration with Stantec, the museum's distinctive, curvilinear, elevated structure has been imaginatively compared to a spacecraft, a cloud, or a natural tree canopy. This five-story, 300,000-square-foot edifice is gracefully integrated into a sprawling 13-acre campus, meticulously designed by landscape architect Mia Lehrer. The campus features lush gardens, winding pathways, and expansive public areas, enhancing its appeal as a community hub.

Inside the Galleries: A Diverse Collection of Narrative Art

Within its walls, the museum dedicates over 100,000 square feet to gallery space, complemented by two theaters, a complimentary research library, educational classrooms, a café, and a rooftop dining experience known as Skywalker Grill. The debut exhibitions will showcase a remarkable collection of over 1,300 pieces selected from a permanent archive exceeding 40,000 works. This diverse array spans masterpieces by Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, Jacob Lawrence, and Charles White, alongside comic art, illustrations from children's books, vintage movie posters, captivating murals, and contemporary works by artists such as Banksy and Frank Frazetta. Notably, pieces from Disney are absent from this eclectic mix.

The Enduring Legacy of "Star Wars" and Popular Culture

Indeed, the iconic "Star Wars" saga holds a special place within the museum. The inaugural cinematic exhibit, "Star Wars in Motion," proudly displays artifacts such as C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader's suit, Princess Leia's attire, Luke Skywalker's weathered landspeeder, and an imposing model of an Imperial AT-AT. Outside, a bronze statue dramatically captures Leia's confrontation with Jabba the Hutt. However, the beloved franchise represents merely a segment of the museum's extensive offerings, which Lucas envisions as a "temple to the people's art." He expressed profound satisfaction in commemorating illustrators and artists who breathe life into narratives, transforming abstract myths into tangible realities through their visual interpretations.

Bridging the Divide Between Fine Art and Popular Imagination

The museum purposefully eschews the conventional distinctions between high art and popular imagery. Its exhibition spaces are thoughtfully organized around universal themes such as love, family, labor, childhood, sports, adventure, science fiction, and community. This innovative approach juxtaposes the works of widely recognized commercial artists with those traditionally found in prestigious art institutions, fostering a more inclusive appreciation of artistic expression.

Art's Role in Shaping Societal Bonds

Lucas passionately argued that the museum's mission extends beyond merely elevating the status of illustrators. He believes that shared visual narratives are fundamental to forging common beliefs and strengthening societal cohesion. He emphasized the potent combination of images and stories, asserting that together they lay the groundwork for a functioning society. Lucas concluded that narrative art cultivates a collective belief system, enabling people to collaborate peacefully and achieve accomplishments that would be impossible for individuals alone.

Accessibility and Community Engagement

Mellody Hobson echoed this sentiment, describing the institution as a museum created "by the people, for the people." General admission will be $25, with free entry for visitors aged 17 and under. Residents of the 90037 ZIP code will also be eligible for complimentary admission through the museum’s LM37 pass, ensuring broad community access. Lucas concluded his remarks with a wry acknowledgment of the media's presence, stating his commitment to his vision regardless of public opinion.
