Celebration of Animated Storytelling: Joel Crawford at SCAD AnimationFest

On September 25, 2026, a momentous occasion will unfold at SCADshow in Atlanta as Joel Crawford is presented with the Creative Impact in Animation Award. This prestigious honor, bestowed by Variety, recognizes Crawford's profound influence on the world of animated cinema. The event will feature an exclusive screening of his much-anticipated film, 'Forgotten Island', a project he both wrote and directed alongside his long-term collaborator, Januel Mercado. The film, which boasts an impressive voice cast including H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, and Lea Salonga, is slated for a theatrical release by Universal Pictures on the same day. The SCAD AnimationFest, running from September 23 to 25, has a rich history of celebrating animation titans, with past recipients including Chris Miller, Nick Park, and the directorial trio behind 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse'. Christina Routhier, Senior Executive Director of SCAD theaters and festivals, emphasized that Crawford’s work exemplifies a rare synergy of technical mastery and profound storytelling, serving as a powerful example for aspiring animators. His journey through the studio system has been marked by a rapid ascent, beginning with his directorial debut on 'The Croods: A New Age' and his pivotal role as head of story on 'Trolls', followed by 'Trolls Holiday'. Joining DreamWorks Animation in 2006, Crawford significantly contributed to iconic films such as 'Shrek Forever After', 'Rise of the Guardians', 'Bee Movie', and the 'Kung Fu Panda' series. A proud alumnus of the California Institute of the Arts, where he once honed his skills as a caricature artist at Six Flags Magic Mountain, Crawford's recognition at SCAD marks a full-circle moment, having received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the university in 2023 for his monumental contributions to animation.

Joel Crawford's journey in animation underscores the power of creative vision and persistent dedication. His ability to fuse diverse elements, such as the spaghetti western genre with absurdist comedy in 'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish', not only captivates audiences but also pushes the boundaries of animated storytelling. This award serves as a powerful reminder that innovative thinking and a deep passion for the craft can lead to remarkable achievements and inspire future generations to explore the limitless possibilities of animation.
