Konami Hints at New Castlevania 3D Collection

Konami, the renowned video game developer, appears to be preparing a new collection of Castlevania titles, focusing on the series' 3D action entries. This speculation arises as the franchise commemorates its 40th anniversary, a milestone celebrated with the impending release of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse and a limited-time free mobile version of the original game. A recent anniversary trailer, designed to showcase the series' rich history from its 1986 NES debut to the upcoming installment, inadvertently revealed hints about the next compilation.

Upcoming Castlevania Collection to Feature 3D Titles

Approximately one minute and twenty-two seconds into the celebratory trailer, attentive fans noticed four distinct portraits, each representing a key game in the Castlevania saga. While the first portrait was dedicated to the forthcoming Belmont's Curse, the subsequent three depicted games that have yet to receive modern console re-releases: Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Given Konami's recent efforts to reintroduce most of its other Castlevania titles through various collections, it is highly probable that these three 3D action games will form the core of a new compilation.

These particular games are notable for their departure from the series' traditional side-scrolling format, embracing a 3D action style. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, launched in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, garnered more favorable reviews than its N64 predecessor. Its successor, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, released in 2005, introduced a more expansive, open-ended structure reminiscent of Symphony of the Night. Finally, MercurySteam's 2010 reboot, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, is often hailed as the pinnacle of 3D Castlevania experiences.

The selection of this trio is likely due to their status as the most critically acclaimed 3D Castlevania entries. Earlier 3D attempts, such as the N64 Castlevania, are generally considered outdated by modern standards, and the later Lords of Shadow 2 received widespread criticism.

Konami has been actively re-releasing Castlevania games over the past few years. In 2019, the Castlevania Anniversary Collection brought together the first four games alongside some unique inclusions like Kid Dracula. This was followed by the Castlevania Advance Collection in 2021, featuring the Game Boy Advance trilogy and Castlevania: Dracula X. Most recently, the Dominus Collection in 2024 re-released all three DS titles. With nearly all other Castlevania games made available on modern platforms, it is a logical next step for Konami to delve into its 3D catalog, despite some of these titles not achieving the same critical adoration as their 2D counterparts.

This strategic move by Konami to reintroduce its 3D Castlevania titles offers both new and long-time fans an opportunity to experience these often-overlooked entries. It highlights the company's commitment to preserving the franchise's legacy and making its extensive library accessible on current gaming platforms, ensuring that the rich history of Castlevania continues to captivate audiences for years to come.
