Leading Lawn and Garden Distributor Faces Chapter 11 and Potential Liquidation

Despite a flourishing lawn and garden market, BFG Supply, a major wholesale distributor with 53 years of operation, is on the brink of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and facing potential liquidation. Recent data from the 2026 National Gardening Report indicates a record high in total market spending at $79.0 billion in 2025 and a substantial increase in per-household spending, reaching $740, even as the number of gardening households slightly decreased. However, this overall market strength hasn't insulated BFG Supply from severe financial difficulties.

The company, which boasts a vast distribution network across North America and partnerships with over a thousand manufacturers, is reportedly working with Goodwin as a legal advisor on restructuring. Sources suggest that BFG Supply plans to conduct a sales process in court to generate funds for creditors, including lender Ares Management. The situation remains fluid, with potential for either an out-of-court resolution or a formal bankruptcy filing, accompanied by employee layoffs and a halt on new orders due to its distressed financial state. The firm has also canceled all its annual trade shows, with no refunds yet issued to those who paid for event tickets, placing them behind secured creditors in the repayment hierarchy.

BFG Supply's challenges stem from its position as a wholesaler, relying on demand from retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's. While these major retailers showed mixed traffic patterns in the second quarter, industry expert Dominick Miserandino of RTM Nexus explains that the issue isn't a decline in gardening interest, but rather a shift in consumer behavior. Cost-conscious consumers are increasingly turning to big-box stores, which leverage their buying power to pressure commercial growers, who in turn squeeze wholesalers like BFG Supply on pricing, trapping them in a difficult financial squeeze.

The impending bankruptcy of a long-standing industry leader like BFG Supply serves as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics within the retail supply chain. Even in a seemingly robust market, businesses can face profound challenges when consumer behaviors shift and larger players exert significant influence. This situation underscores the importance of adaptability and strategic positioning for companies to navigate market pressures and ensure their long-term viability. The resilience of businesses in evolving economic landscapes often hinges on their ability to innovate and respond effectively to changing market demands, fostering a path towards sustainable growth and prosperity.
