Unlock the Power: Iconic Universes Collide, Now More Accessible Than Ever!

A Coveted Collaboration: The Reprint of Universes Beyond Warhammer 40,000 Decks

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed a forthcoming, albeit modest, reprint of the much-coveted Magic: The Gathering Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks. This announcement, initially reported by IGN, signifies a significant development for collectors and players who have faced challenges acquiring these decks since their 2022 debut. These decks, pioneers in the Universes Beyond series, introduced a wealth of new cards that have yet to see further printings.

Market Dynamics: Addressing the Soaring Value of Collector's Items

Upon their initial release, the four Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks were priced at a reasonable $59.99 each. However, their scarcity and popularity quickly led to a dramatic surge in value on the secondary market. Currently, individual decks command prices in the hundreds of dollars, with complete, sealed sets fetching upwards of $1,000 on platforms like TCGPlayer. This reprint seeks to temper these elevated prices by increasing availability.

Delving into the Factions: Thematic Breakdown of Each Commander Deck

Each of the four Commander decks is meticulously crafted around a distinct faction from the expansive Warhammer 40,000 universe. "Forces of the Imperium" is an Esper (white-blue-black) deck that emphasizes Imperial Inquisitors and the "Investigate" mechanic, generating Clue tokens for card drawing. "Necron Dynasties," a mono-black deck, focuses on artifact creatures and is notably the most expensive of the Warhammer precons on the secondary market. "Tyranid Swarm," a Temur (blue-red-green) deck, is designed for overwhelming opponents with numerous creatures. Finally, "The Ruinous Powers," a Grixis (blue-black-red) deck, embodies the essence of the Forces of Chaos, featuring the formidable Commander Abaddon the Despoiler and his powerful "Cascade" ability, enabling multi-spell chaining. Each deck comprises 100 cards, with 42 new cards specifically designed for this release.

Navigating the Divide: The Universes Beyond Series and Player Reception

While the Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks garnered positive feedback at launch, the broader Universes Beyond brand has elicited mixed reactions within the Magic: The Gathering community. A segment of players expresses dissatisfaction with the rapid integration of various intellectual properties, drawing parallels to the extensive crossovers seen in franchises like Fortnite. This sentiment stems from the juxtaposition of traditional Magic creatures with characters from SpongeBob SquarePants or Spider-Man. Conversely, many players enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to command iconic figures like Cloud Strife and Gandalf. These crossovers have also contributed to an accelerated release schedule for Magic sets, making it challenging for players to keep pace with new cards and increasing the financial commitment required to remain competitive in various formats.
