Joseph Kosinski's reimagining of the iconic television series is officially dubbed "Miami Vice '85," with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler confirmed to portray the lead characters, Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett, respectively. After extensive discussions, the actors have finalized their roles in this highly anticipated cinematic venture, which promises a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s. Unlike its 2006 predecessor, this adaptation will embrace its period setting, inspired by the pilot and initial season of the original series.

Scheduled for an August 6, 2027 release by Universal Pictures, "Miami Vice '85" will see Butler stepping into the shoes of James 'Sonny' Crockett, a character originally brought to life by Don Johnson. Jordan will embody Ricardo Tubbs, a role first played by Philip Michael Thomas. Both actors bring significant experience to their parts: Jordan, an Oscar winner, is known for his work in "Sinners," "Black Panther," and "Creed III," and is also set to direct and star in a new rendition of "The Thomas Crown Affair." Butler, an Oscar nominee, gained acclaim for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis," and has also featured in "Dune: Part Two," "The Bikeriders," and "Masters of the Air," with an upcoming appearance in the A24 crime thriller "Enemies."

Production for "Miami Vice '85" is slated to commence this year, under the direction of Kosinski, fresh off his success with blockbusters like "F1: The Movie" and "Top Gun: Maverick." Kosinski plans to utilize IMAX cameras for the film, mirroring his approach in previous projects, to capture the distinct allure and shadowy undertones of Miami in the mid-1980s. The screenplay, penned by Dan Gilroy based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, with an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer, ensures a narrative deeply rooted in the series' origins. The project is being produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski himself.

This new "Miami Vice" film is set to captivate audiences by merging a beloved classic with a contemporary vision, promising an immersive and exhilarating experience that honors its vibrant 80s roots while delivering a fresh narrative through the talents of its lead actors and visionary director. It exemplifies the enduring appeal of engaging storytelling and the continuous evolution of cinematic art, reminding us that even familiar narratives can be reborn with renewed energy and purpose.
