The recently unveiled teaser for the documentary on Elon Musk has ignited significant discussion, painting a picture of a figure whose legacy is sharply divided. The preview suggests the film will delve into the profound impact and controversial nature of the entrepreneur, leaving audiences to ponder whether he is a groundbreaking visionary or a more problematic individual. With its festival premieres imminent, the documentary is poised to become a focal point for debate regarding modern innovation and leadership.

Alex Gibney's 'Musk' Documentary Previews Polarizing Portrayal

On September 7, 2026, the initial glimpse of Alex Gibney's highly anticipated documentary, simply titled "Musk," was made public, ahead of its world premiere on September 8 at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, followed by a showing at the Toronto International Film Festival. The 48-second teaser features dynamic visuals of space exploration and advanced technology, interwoven with a cacophony of voices offering starkly contrasting perspectives on Elon Musk. While some narrators laud him as potentially "the greatest living inventor" and a "real-life Iron Man" or "one of the greatest builders of all time," others sharply criticize him, labeling him "chaotic, random, capricious, manifestly cruel and selfish," and even a "fascist." The teaser culminates with a dramatic statement proclaiming, "Elon is a nuke," as a spacecraft dramatically crashes and erupts in flames, vividly illustrating the film's intention to explore the deep divisions in public opinion surrounding Musk.

Director Alex Gibney first hinted at the project in March 2023, revealing that production was already well underway. Musk himself reacted to the news via his X (formerly Twitter) account, anticipating the film would be a "hit piece," to which Gibney retorted, "how would you know?" This exchange further fuels the narrative of a contentious figure. The extensive documentary, with an approximate runtime of four hours, will also feature an original musical contribution from David Byrne, the frontman of Talking Heads, titled "Let Me Sell You a Dream." The production team includes a formidable roster of talent, with Gibney directing and producing alongside Jessie Deeter and Erin Edeiken from Jigsaw Productions, Dana O'Keefe from Double Agent, Joey Marra and Zhang Xin representing Closer Media, and Anonymous Content's Nick Shumaker and Jessica Grimshaw. Ronan Farrow and Lawrence Wright also contribute to the producing team.

This documentary promises to be more than just a biographical account; it appears to be a profound examination of the complex interplay between innovation, public persona, and societal impact. The conflicting viewpoints presented in the teaser reflect the broader public discourse surrounding figures like Musk, challenging viewers to form their own conclusions about his true nature and legacy. It highlights the often-blurred lines between genius and recklessness, ambition and hubris, in the narratives of modern innovators. The film’s release at prominent festivals suggests a deep dive into these themes, encouraging a critical re-evaluation of how we perceive and contextualize the actions of those who wield immense influence and power.
