Nintendo Set to Release Revised Switch 2 Model in Europe to Meet EU Battery Regulations

Nintendo's official European website has officially confirmed that future versions of the Switch 2 for the European region will undergo a revision to comply with new European Union regulations. These updated consoles will feature unique model numbers and an additional 'OSM' code on their packaging, distinguishing them as separate products designed to meet the new standards.

This initiative stems from the EU's Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which mandates that from February 18, 2027, batteries integrated into certain appliances sold in the EU must be easily replaceable by end-users. Nintendo is actively implementing measures to align with these requirements, similar to a previous revision of the original Switch 1 model in 2019 that improved battery life and addressed security vulnerabilities without significant cosmetic alterations. The company also recently announced price adjustments for the Switch 2, scheduled to take effect this September in Western markets.

This move highlights a growing trend towards greater consumer rights and environmental responsibility in the electronics industry. By enabling users to replace their own batteries, Nintendo is not only complying with regulations but also potentially extending the lifespan of its products and reducing electronic waste, fostering a more sustainable approach to gaming hardware.
