Review of 'Brace Your Heart': A Fusion of Heritage and Modernity in an Homage to Sámi Femininity

Stephen King

Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

Amanda Kernell's newest cinematic endeavor, 'Brace Your Heart,' offers a poignant examination of contemporary Sámi identity, specifically focusing on the experiences of women. Diverging from her earlier historical drama 'Sámi Blood,' this film transports audiences to the present day, revealing the demanding realities faced by a young female reindeer herder. It strips away any romanticized notions, presenting the arduous physical and economic struggles inherent in the profession, alongside the distinct challenges of being a woman in a traditionally male sphere. Kernell, herself a member of the indigenous Sámi community in northern Europe, masterfully showcases the resilience of Sámi culture and womanhood in the 21st century.

'Brace Your Heart' has garnered significant attention, premiering successfully at the Toronto Film Festival's Oscar-qualifying Platform program, where it received a special jury mention, and subsequently at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Its broad appeal, despite its unique and lesser-known setting, suggests a promising international distribution. The film introduces Elli Sara Valkeapää, a real-life reindeer herder, in an emotionally profound role. She portrays Ejva, a 20-year-old who suddenly inherits her deceased father's reindeer business. Ejva must rapidly adapt to the harsh demands of her new role, which exacts a heavy toll both physically and mentally, even enduring life-threatening incidents like her snowmobile plunging into icy waters. Kernell and cinematographer Sophia Olsson capture these moments with a striking, detached composure, emphasizing the daily grind and inherent dangers.

Ejva, despite her inherent strength and family support, finds herself overwhelmed by the solitude of her responsibilities. She strategically aligns with Heaika, a prominent local herder with whom she shares a complex romantic involvement. However, her affections lean towards his gentler cousin, Nejla, who previously saved her from a perilous ice incident. This framing initially presents a conventional love triangle but evolves into a nuanced exploration of diverse Sámi masculinities as Heaika's actions take a darker turn. Ejva's eventual contemplation of modern urban life raises questions about the sacrifices involved in preserving her family's and cultural heritage. Kernell's script, while sometimes feeling structured in its portrayal of societal issues through one individual's journey, is executed with remarkable and powerful restraint. Valkeapää's subtly expressive performance, often captured in tight close-ups that highlight the impact of the environment on her, allows for quiet moments of reflection as she grapples with decisions that could shape her family's future and reputation. Kernell's observant filmmaking, complemented by Olsson's pragmatic, quasi-documentary style, vividly depicts the Sápmi region's extraordinary landscape. The ethereal score by Rebekka Karijord and Kristian Eidnes Andersen, infused with cultural authenticity, further enriches the narrative. Featuring a largely non-professional cast, 'Brace Your Heart' provides a detailed and authentic glimpse into the Sámi way of life, extending beyond the confines of its narrative.

This film is a profound celebration of identity and tradition, demonstrating the courage required to uphold one's heritage in the face of modern challenges. It underscores the importance of resilience, strategic thinking, and emotional depth in navigating life's complex currents, reminding us that true strength often lies in the quiet determination to preserve what matters most.
