Robert Eggers Discusses New Werewolf Film, 'Werwulf'

Mathematician and game designer who created "Magic: The Gathering," revolutionizing collectible games.

Renowned director Robert Eggers, celebrated for his distinctive horror works such as 'Nosferatu' and 'The Witch,' is poised to unveil his latest cinematic endeavor, 'Werwulf.' This film aims to elevate the werewolf genre, an often-understated corner of horror cinema, with Eggers' signature blend of dark vision, historical meticulousness, and a substantial production budget. Scheduled for a Christmas Day release, 'Werwulf' delves into a chilling 14th-century English tale of a town besieged by a monstrous, wolf-like entity. Polygon recently engaged with Eggers via email to uncover exclusive details about the highly anticipated project.

Eggers shared that 'Werwulf' represents an evolution rather than a dramatic leap from his previous works. He specifically noted the unexpected difficulties encountered while filming in the Welsh forests, describing them as more demanding than the extreme settings of 'The Northman' and 'The Lighthouse.' The director emphasized the necessity for adaptability in reshaping meticulously planned scenes to align with the unpredictable nature of the forest environment, acknowledging its unique and unyielding rules.

When questioned about the inherent risks in his cinematic choices, particularly given the bold stylistic nature of 'Nosferatu,' Eggers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to realize his artistic visions. He believes that contemporary audiences, whether dedicated cinephiles or casual moviegoers, possess a heightened cinematic literacy and an appetite for novel experiences, providing a fertile ground for filmmakers willing to push boundaries. Eggers stated that he must trust his own instincts and hope his work resonates with the prevailing cultural zeitgeist, acknowledging that there's no fixed formula for success in this regard.

Discussing his frequent collaborator, Willem Dafoe, Eggers confirmed that he often conceives roles with Dafoe in mind. He highlighted Dafoe's profound understanding of what he terms "the joke of life," noting how Dafoe's characters consistently exude enjoyment in their actions, even when those actions venture into darker territories. Eggers also praised Dafoe's distinctive facial features, deeming them especially fitting for period-piece productions like 'Werwulf.'

Reflecting on his favorite werewolf films, Eggers cited 'The Company of Wolves' and Hammer's 'Curse of the Werewolf' as personal preferences that align with his aesthetic sensibilities. However, he unequivocally declared 'An American Werewolf in London' as the genre's undisputed masterpiece, acknowledging its significant impact and superior craftsmanship.

Robert Eggers' upcoming film, 'Werwulf,' is anticipated to bring a fresh and intense perspective to the werewolf mythos. His commitment to historical accuracy, unique visual style, and willingness to challenge conventional horror narratives continue to distinguish him as a significant voice in contemporary cinema.
