The 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is set to open its doors on November 6th with the compelling film 'Ulya' by director Viesturs Kairišs. This co-production, featuring contributions from Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Lithuania, previously made its debut in the Un Certain Regard section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The festival's opening night will not only showcase this cinematic work but also commemorate three decades of PÖFF with a special anniversary performance, highlighting film music from across the Baltic region.

Central to this year's festival is the 'Focus: Baltics' program, which shines a spotlight on the vibrant film industries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. This dedicated focus underscores the rich storytelling traditions and creative talent present in these nations. The festival will also honor distinguished figures in cinema with its Lifetime Achievement Awards and support emerging talent through the Bruno O'Ya Young Actor Scholarship, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing the future of film.

'Ulya' Film to Kick Off 30th Tallinn Black Nights Festival

The 30th iteration of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, widely known as PÖFF, is scheduled to commence on November 6th, marking a significant milestone for the event. The festival will inaugurate its proceedings with a special screening of Viesturs Kairišs' cinematic creation, 'Ulya'. This particular film, a collaborative effort involving production companies from Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Lithuania, garnered international attention when it was first presented at the Cannes Film Festival within the Un Certain Regard program. The choice of 'Ulya' as the opening feature underscores the festival's commitment to showcasing compelling international cinema and celebrating cross-border artistic endeavors.

'Ulya' draws its narrative inspiration from the extraordinary life of Uljana Semjonova, a legendary Latvian basketball player who achieved remarkable success, including two Olympic gold medals and three world championships. The film chronicles her fascinating trajectory, starting from her humble beginnings in an isolated rural Old Believer community and leading her into the intensely competitive arena of professional basketball. Throughout her journey, Semjonova navigates the challenges posed by her exceptional height and the rigorous demands of elite athletic performance. Director Kairišs, known for works such as 'The Sign Painter' and 'January', brings this inspiring story to life, with Kārlis Arnolds Avots taking on the lead role, a concept originally conceived by him. This production, a joint venture between Ego Media, Allfilm, Staron Film, and Tremora, has also been selected to represent Latvia in the international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, further solidifying its critical acclaim and potential global reach.

Celebrating Baltic Cinema and Artistic Collaboration

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival's 30th anniversary celebration goes beyond merely showcasing a single film; it is a comprehensive tribute to the dynamic and evolving film industries of the Baltic states. The festival's 'Focus: Baltics' segment highlights the unique cinematic voices and narratives emerging from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. This initiative aims to foster greater appreciation and understanding of the cultural richness and diverse storytelling within these countries. The decision to emphasize Baltic cinema in this landmark year reflects the festival's enduring commitment to its regional roots while simultaneously engaging with a global audience.

The opening ceremony itself will be a grand affair, designed to commemorate PÖFF's three-decade legacy. A specially commissioned stage production titled “Round and Round” will take attendees on a nostalgic journey through the festival's history. Adding a musical dimension to the celebrations, three accomplished pianists—Hans Matthias Kari from Estonia, Kārlis Gusts Zariņš from Latvia, and Gabriele Agile Bajoraite from Lithuania—will perform selections of film music, each representing their respective countries. This musical tapestry will symbolize the artistic unity and shared cultural heritage of the Baltics. Furthermore, the ceremony will also be the platform for presenting the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of cinema. Concurrently, the Bruno O’Ya Young Actor Scholarship will be awarded, signifying the festival's dedication to supporting and encouraging the next generation of acting talent. These elements collectively underscore PÖFF's role not just as a film screening event, but as a vibrant cultural institution that celebrates both established masters and emerging artists within the global cinematic landscape.
