U.S. Equity Market Gains Driven by AI and Semiconductor Recovery Amidst Geopolitical Shifts

Mariana Mazzucato

Economist and professor focused on government's role in innovation and value creation in the economy.

The U.S. stock market experienced an upward trend during the period spanning from July 9 to August 13, 2026. This growth occurred despite increased geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which initially caused a sharp rise in oil prices due to concerns over the Strait of Hormuz. The market's rally was broad-based, with leadership initially observed in the energy and financial sectors. However, as crude oil prices subsequently receded, the equity market closed at a new high.

A significant event impacting the market was the liquidation of approximately $16 billion in public equities by the hedge fund Situational Awareness, a portion of its $45 billion under management. This portfolio was acquired by Citadel Securities on July 30. Once this large selling pressure was alleviated, there was a notable resurgence in AI infrastructure and semiconductor companies during early August. Concurrently, the Federal Reserve maintained its target interest rate range at 3.50%-3.75%, following a 9-3 vote on July 29. Furthermore, a weaker employment report and more moderate inflation figures for July, across both consumer and producer prices, contributed to easing pressures on growth-oriented equities, thereby supporting the market's recovery towards the end of the period.

The resilience and adaptability of the U.S. equity market are evident in its ability to navigate geopolitical uncertainties and significant financial events. The recovery, particularly in the technology sector, underscores the innovative drive and strong underlying fundamentals of companies at the forefront of artificial intelligence and semiconductor development. This period highlights the dynamic nature of financial markets, where challenges can ultimately pave the way for renewed investor confidence and growth, emphasizing the importance of strategic positioning and long-term vision in investment.
