For newcomers to the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), grasping the distinct roles of the three primary card categories is essential. Every Pokémon TCG deck is constructed around these core elements: Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy cards.

This guide aims to clarify the function of each card type within the game's mechanics, detailing how the rules govern their deployment and impact. By understanding these fundamentals, you will be well-prepared to dive into the Pokémon TCG, an enduringly popular and active card game.

Pokémon cards are the cornerstone of any deck, serving as the central figures around which strategies are built. These cards vary greatly, beginning with basic Pokémon, identifiable by the 'basic' label in the upper-left corner. These can be played directly onto the field as active Pokémon or on the bench without prerequisites. Even basic Pokémon can be formidable, with some variants like 'ex' Pokémon boasting high HP, potent attacks, and special abilities. Basic Pokémon can evolve into more powerful forms, often facilitated by Trainer cards that can accelerate the evolution process. When a Pokémon is defeated and moved to the discard pile, the opposing player claims prize cards. Collecting all prize cards leads to victory, though the number of prize cards awarded can differ based on the specific Pokémon type.

Trainer cards, an umbrella term encompassing Item and Supporter cards, offer crucial tactical advantages. While both categories provide similar effects, a key distinction lies in their play limits: only one Supporter card can be used per turn, whereas multiple Item cards can be played. Supporter cards, often named after characters from Pokémon lore, typically have a more significant impact than Item cards, justifying their restriction. They cannot be played by the first player in a game. Item cards, though individually less impactful, can create powerful combinations when played in sequence. The rules often refer to 'Trainer cards' collectively, specifying 'Supporter' or 'Item' when distinctions are necessary. An advanced subtype, ACE SPEC cards, are exceptionally powerful, with only one allowed per deck. These can be Item, Supporter, or even Special Energy cards, recognizable by their vibrant pink frames and explicit rule text.

Energy cards are vital for enabling Pokémon to perform attacks and retreat from battle. Generally, only one Energy card can be attached per turn to either an active Pokémon or one on the bench, unless modified by Trainer cards or Pokémon abilities. Decks typically contain a limited number of Energy cards, relying on Trainer cards to search for them or retrieve them from the discard pile. Strategic attachment of Energy is paramount, as discarding Energy without recovery can be detrimental. Special Energy cards function similarly to basic Energy but provide additional benefits, such as damage reduction, increased damage output, or flexible color designation. Due to their potent effects, Special Energy cards are limited to four per deck, while basic Energy cards have no such restriction.

With a clear understanding of these Pokémon TCG card types, you will be equipped to make informed decisions during gameplay. Always consult the specific rule text on each Pokémon card for precise instructions on how and when to use them, ensuring you are prepared for any battle scenario.
