Ur-Energy Reopens Wyoming Uranium Mine After Decades of Inactivity

Ur-Energy Inc. has announced the resumption of uranium extraction activities at its Shirley Basin In-Situ Recovery (ISR) initiative located in central Wyoming. This development marks the establishment of the company's second operational uranium mine within the United States. The Shirley Basin project holds considerable historical importance, as it is recognized as the origin of ISR uranium mining in the nation. This particular site had remained inactive in terms of uranium production since 1992, until its acquisition by Ur-Energy in 2013 as part of the Pathfinder Mines purchase.
The company has elaborated on its methodology, confirming that the Shirley Basin operation employs ISR technology, an environmentally conscious extraction technique. This process entails the recovery of uranium-rich groundwater through a meticulously designed network of wells. The collected solution then undergoes adsorption onto specialized ion exchange resin columns situated on-site, after which it is transferred for subsequent processing. Ur-Energy has also indicated that active uranium capture from Mine Unit 1 is already in progress, with expectations for uranium concentrations in the extracted solutions to progressively increase as the wellfield is optimized and additional production circuits are fully integrated.
The Shirley Basin facility is licensed to support an annual wellfield and toll processing capacity of up to 2 million pounds of triuranium octoxide (U3O8), a stable form of uranium. The basin's reserves are estimated to contain approximately 9.1 million pounds of U3O8 in measured and indicated mineral resources, boasting an average grade of 0.22%. Furthermore, the project is anticipated to maintain an operational lifespan of around nine years, spanning across three distinct shallow mining units.
The reawakening of the Shirley Basin uranium mine is a testament to perseverance and innovation, demonstrating that valuable resources can be responsibly harnessed even after extended periods of dormancy. This initiative not only contributes to energy security but also showcases the potential for revitalizing historical sites with modern, sustainable practices, paving the way for future advancements in resource management and environmental stewardship.
