Variety, a leading entertainment publication, has announced the appointment of Guy Lodge as its new chief film critic, marking a significant strengthening of its critical team. This strategic move aims to enhance the publication's global film coverage and reinforce its commitment to insightful film analysis.

A New Chapter in Film Criticism: Guy Lodge Joins Variety's Esteemed Ranks

Variety Welcomes Guy Lodge as Principal Film Critic

Variety recently announced Guy Lodge's elevation to the role of chief film critic. Lodge, who has been a contributor to the publication since 2011, will now officially join forces with Owen Gleiberman, another esteemed lead film critic at Variety. Their combined expertise will cover a broad spectrum of cinematic releases, from major studio productions to independent and art-house features, alongside extensive coverage of international film festivals.

Transition in Leadership: Lodge Succeeds Debruge

Guy Lodge steps into the position previously held by Peter Debruge, who concluded his two-decade tenure with Variety in February. Debruge has since taken on the directorship of the SXSW Film & TV Festival. Lodge will operate from Variety's London office, ensuring a strong international presence for the publication's critical endeavors.

A Distinguished Career in Film Journalism

Beyond his extensive contributions to Variety, Lodge has maintained a weekly film column for The Observer in the UK since 2013. His critical writings have also graced the pages of prestigious publications such as The Guardian, Sight & Sound, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, and Attitude magazine. This diverse portfolio underscores his profound impact on film journalism over the years.

Embracing a Full-Time Commitment to Variety

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Lodge stated that his affiliation with Variety has been a defining aspect of his critical career. He views this full-time appointment as the opportune moment to deepen his commitment to the publication. Lodge articulated his eagerness to build upon the legacy of his predecessor, Peter Debruge, and to collaborate with Variety's global network of reviewers. He emphasized the joy of exploring the multifaceted nature of film through criticism, promising to continue this exploration in his expanded capacity.

Lodge's Academic and Professional Foundations

Born in Johannesburg, Guy Lodge's upbringing spanned South Africa, the UK, and the US. He pursued French and film studies at the University of the Witwatersrand before furthering his education with an MA in screenwriting from the London Film School. His journey into film journalism commenced as a critic and reporter for the website In Contention, laying the groundwork for his distinguished career.

Active Participation in the Film Community

Lodge's involvement in the film industry extends beyond his journalistic endeavors. He currently serves as the vice chair of the London Film Critics' Circle and chairs the nomination committee for the British Independent Film Awards. Additionally, he is a voting member of BAFTA, actively contributing to the recognition and celebration of cinematic excellence.
