Amazon has decided to discontinue the development of a new 'Stargate' television series. The project, which was first announced in November 2025 with Martin Gero serving as its writer, executive producer, and showrunner, will no longer proceed. Gero, known for his earlier contributions to 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate: Atlantis', was set to lead this new iteration of the beloved science fiction franchise.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Amazon executives expressed apprehension regarding Gero's proposed creative vision for the series. Their primary concern was that the show's appeal might be limited primarily to the established fanbase of the 'Stargate' franchise, potentially failing to attract a wider viewership. Despite this specific project being shelved, Amazon, having acquired 'Stargate' producer MGM Studios, is still actively seeking other avenues and concepts to expand the 'Stargate' universe.
The original 'Stargate' saga commenced with a 1994 feature film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. This was followed by the highly successful television series 'Stargate SG-1', which ran for an impressive 10 seasons, featuring actors like Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. A spinoff, 'Stargate Atlantis', further extended the franchise with five seasons between 2004 and 2008. The franchise also includes two direct-to-video movies and three additional television series, with 'Stargate Origins' being the most recent entry in 2018.
While the cancellation of Martin Gero's 'Stargate' series is disappointing for many, it underscores the dynamic nature of television production and the constant balancing act between creative vision and broad market appeal. The enduring legacy of 'Stargate' suggests that fans can still hope for future explorations of its rich universe, as Amazon continues to assess new possibilities for this iconic science fiction property.
