Hiam Abbass, a celebrated Palestinian actress and director, is set to receive the prestigious 2027 European Achievement in World Cinema Award. This esteemed recognition highlights her significant contributions to the film industry, acknowledging a career that spans decades and encompasses a diverse range of international productions. Her multifaceted talent has left an indelible mark on global cinema, earning her critical acclaim and numerous accolades throughout her journey.

The award ceremony will take place in January 2027, as part of the 39th European Film Awards, held in the historic city of Athens. Abbass's remarkable journey in cinema began with her leading role in Ariane Mnouchkine's 'La Nuit Miraculeuse' in 1989. Since then, she has graced the screen in over 100 films, collaborating with renowned directors and contributing to both Palestinian and international projects. Her filmography includes notable works such as Hany Abu-Assad’s 'Paradise Now', Tom McCarthy’s 'The Visitor', Jim Jarmusch’s 'The Limits of Control', and Denis Villeneuve’s 'Blade Runner 2049'. She also gained widespread recognition for her role as Marcia Roy in the acclaimed HBO series 'Succession', which earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2023.

Born in Nazareth, Abbass’s early career was shaped by her involvement with the Palestinian National Theatre El-Hakawati in East Jerusalem. Her commitment to her craft led her to leave Palestine for London during a European theatre tour, eventually settling in Paris in the late 1980s. Beyond her acting prowess, Abbass has also ventured into directing, with her film 'Inheritance' being showcased at various international festivals, including Gijón, Sao Paulo, and Venice Days in 2012. In celebration of her illustrious career, the European culture channel ARTE, in collaboration with the European Film Academy, will feature a selection of her films, including 'The Syrian Bride' and 'Inheritance', making them accessible to a wider audience.

The upcoming European Film Awards will serve as a platform to honor Abbass's profound impact on the cinematic landscape. Her journey from Palestinian theatre to international stardom, marked by both artistic integrity and unwavering dedication, stands as an inspiration. The event will undoubtedly be a memorable occasion, recognizing her enduring legacy and her role in shaping the narrative of world cinema.
