Kelly Clarkson Advocates for Separate Music Charts for AI Artists

Acclaimed novelist ("Americanah") whose essays and talks offer sharp critiques of culture and feminism.

In a recent discussion, Kelly Clarkson shared her nuanced perspective on artificial intelligence within the music industry. While acknowledging the innovative and artistic possibilities that AI presents, the renowned vocalist firmly believes that musical creations generated by artificial intelligence should not be placed in direct competition with works produced by human artists on conventional music ranking systems. She proposes a clear demarcation through separate charting categories to preserve the integrity of human artistry and ensure equitable recognition.

During an appearance on the 'Las Culturistas' podcast with hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the acclaimed Grammy winner articulated her stance, describing her views as potentially contentious. Clarkson emphasized her admiration for AI's advancements, particularly its artistic applications, stating, "I love AI. There are very amazing things with AI that I’m obsessed with." She enjoys engaging with the technology creatively, much like many others. However, her concern arises when AI-generated music vies for chart positions alongside human-made tracks. "But when you see AI artists competing on a chart with humans, I have an issue. I think there should be a separate chart," she asserted.

Clarkson elaborated on her perspective, highlighting the need for a balanced approach. She welcomes AI's contribution to the musical landscape, viewing it as a valuable tool for innovation and expanding creative avenues, especially for individuals who might otherwise face limitations. "It’s welcome to the table. I think it’s really cool and creative what we’re going to create with AI musically, and people that maybe can’t do certain things will be able to do it now. I think it’s a fun field to play in," she explained. Yet, her fundamental reservation remains the direct rivalry between AI and human creators, likening it to a physical competition where robots would inevitably outperform humans. "It’s basically like having Olympics and then you’re having robots compete with humans, well who’s going to throw it further? Oh, I wonder. So I’m down with it and I think it’s a very interesting thing and what we’re going to do with it is going to be fun, but I do not think they should be competing," she clarified.

The conversation also touched upon the current industry standards. Billboard, the leading music chart authority in the U.S., has not yet prohibited AI-generated music from its rankings. Nevertheless, the publication announced in August its commitment to increasing transparency regarding AI's involvement in music. This includes initiatives to clearly identify songs that utilize AI in its charts and editorial features. Clarkson recognizes that AI's presence is permanent and that it drives significant scientific progress. She stressed the critical importance of distinguishing between AI and human endeavors, stating, "We can’t lose human. We can’t lose what that is." Ultimately, she believes there can be a place for both, but not in a directly competitive space where human ingenuity could be overshadowed. Her comments underscore a growing debate within the entertainment sector about the ethical integration of artificial intelligence and the preservation of human creative expression.

The pop icon's commentary highlights an emerging ethical dilemma in the arts: how to embrace technological innovation without devaluing human talent. She champions AI's role as an assistive and creative force but draws a firm line at direct chart competition, advocating for distinct recognition mechanisms. This stance reflects a broader sentiment among some artists and industry professionals who seek to safeguard the unique contribution of human creativity in an increasingly automated world. Her call for separate charts is not an rejection of AI, but rather a proposal for a structured environment where both human and artificial intelligence creations can thrive and be appreciated on their own merits.
