Letterboxd Attracts Acquisition Interest from A24 and New York Times, Valued at $300 Million

A competitive acquisition scenario is unfolding for Letterboxd, the widely recognized social platform for film enthusiasts. The service, known for its movie reviews and community features, has been a recipient of numerous acquisition proposals over recent months.

Reports suggest that independent film studio A24 and The New York Times are among the latest entities to express interest in acquiring Letterboxd. Citing anonymous sources, a recent report from the New York Times indicates that any potential transaction is anticipated to value the social movie platform at an impressive sum exceeding $300 million. This valuation would represent approximately twenty times Letterboxd's projected earnings of around $15 million for the year 2026.

Expanding Horizons: Who Wants Letterboxd?

The pursuit of Letterboxd has drawn a diverse array of interested parties, extending beyond just A24 and The New York Times. Previously, industry giants such as Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount Skydance, private equity firm TPG, and even Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian have explored the possibility of an acquisition. This widespread interest underscores the increasing recognition of Letterboxd's established user base and its unique position within the film community.

When questioned about the ongoing speculation, Katie Hill, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Communications and External Affairs at The New York Times, stated that the company regularly assesses potential investments but refrains from commenting on acquisition rumors. A24 also chose not to provide a statement, and Letterboxd representatives did not immediately respond to inquiries. The potential acquisition by a studio or streaming service raises important considerations regarding perceived conflicts of interest, as users might question the impartiality of the platform's content recommendations if owned by a company with its own film titles. This concern echoes past discussions about Rotten Tomatoes' independence when it was part of NBCUniversal.

Letterboxd's Growth and Strategic Future

Founded in 2011 and headquartered in New Zealand, Letterboxd has been actively engaging with prospective buyers in recent months. The platform's majority ownership, a 60% stake, was acquired in 2023 by Canadian holding company Tiny, at an estimated valuation of $50 million to $60 million. The remaining 40% is held by Letterboxd co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow. This recent history of investment highlights the platform's significant growth and increasing market appeal.

Letterboxd boasts a global membership exceeding 30 million individuals, catering to a dedicated community of film enthusiasts. In addition to its core social features, the company has successfully launched an online video rental service, featuring independent films and exclusive, previously unreleased titles. This expansion into content distribution further enhances Letterboxd's value proposition and strategic importance within the evolving entertainment landscape. The founders, through a spokesperson in July, indicated that any decisions regarding Letterboxd's future would involve their input, reinforcing their commitment to the platform's vision and community.
