Melania's Film Outperforms Cruise's 'Digger' in Per-Theater Average

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

In a surprising turn of events within the film industry, Marc Beckman, a senior advisor to Melania Trump, recently drew attention to the unexpected box office performance of the 'Melania' documentary. He noted that the film achieved a higher per-theater average revenue compared to Tom Cruise's latest cinematic release, 'Digger,' even though 'Digger' premiered in a far greater number of cinemas.

Beckman's social media remarks emphasized that the documentary 'Melania' earned approximately 67% more per theater than 'Digger,' despite being screened in roughly half the venues. While 'Melania' garnered $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters in its opening weekend, averaging around $4,000 per screen, 'Digger' collected $8 million from 3,321 theaters, resulting in a lower per-theater average of $2,408. This suggests a notable efficiency for the 'Melania' film in terms of audience draw relative to its distribution scale, prompting Beckman to assert that the documentary demonstrated a theatrical drawing power comparable to major Hollywood productions without needing extensive distribution.

Despite its comparative success in per-theater earnings, the 'Melania' documentary, which ultimately grossed $16.6 million globally, still represented a financial setback for Amazon, which had acquired it for $40 million and invested an additional $35 million in marketing. Conversely, 'Digger,' a satirical black comedy by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is projected to incur losses ranging from $150 million to $200 million for Warner Bros., largely due to its substantial $160 million budget and an additional $100 million in marketing expenses, with a break-even point estimated at $350 million worldwide.

The contrasting box office outcomes of these two films offer a unique perspective on commercial success in the movie industry, demonstrating that extensive release and star power do not always guarantee financial triumph. It underscores the unpredictable nature of audience reception and the complex dynamics of film distribution and marketing.
