Nebius's Surging Contracted Power Guidance and Its Market Implications

Nebius has shown remarkable expansion in its contracted power projections for 2026, indicating a robust growth trajectory. Initially, the company projected 3 gigawatts of contracted power by the close of 2026. This figure was subsequently revised upwards to 4 gigawatts in May, and by August, following the release of its second-quarter results, the target was further elevated to an impressive 5 gigawatts. This consistent upward adjustment is attributed to Nebius's ongoing establishment of new facilities across North America and Europe. This expansion suggests that the company's significant stock appreciation, which has nearly tripled year-to-date, may continue its upward trend.

A critical driver of this growth is Nebius's central role in the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) industry. As a leading provider in the neocloud sector, Nebius supplies essential AI capacity to major technology firms such as Meta Platforms and Microsoft. For example, Meta Platforms recently finalized deals totaling $27 billion over five years, with a substantial portion of this capacity expected to be delivered by Nebius starting in early 2027. This demonstrates the scale of demand for Nebius's services, as tech giants routinely secure hundreds of megawatts through single agreements. The company's consistent track record of exceeding its own guidance suggests further upward revisions to its contracted power capacity are possible. Such increases in megawatt capacity and the development of new data centers directly translate into higher potential revenue for Nebius, as evidenced by its Q2 revenue of $582.3 million, marking a 454% year-over-year increase. This robust growth rate is anticipated to persist as Nebius secures and fulfills more contracts.

While the prospect of significant revenue growth is appealing, building AI data centers is a capital-intensive endeavor, requiring substantial investment in energy resources and advanced hardware, such as Nvidia's processors. This financial outlay led Nebius to issue $4 billion in private convertible notes earlier this year, a point of concern for some investors regarding the company's debt levels. However, prepayments from clients alleviate some of these financial pressures. Nebius's Q2 shareholder letter revealed that 70% of its deals include partial prepayments, often covering 50% to 60% of associated capital expenditures. This influx of upfront cash mitigates capital constraints and enables Nebius to strategically manage its capacity, even foregoing immediate deals to secure more favorable terms in the future, given the high demand for AI cloud services. With its annual recurring revenue projected to reach up to $9 billion by year-end, the company's financial strategy focuses on bridging its operational losses with client funding until revenue generation fully takes hold.

Nebius's impressive growth in contracted power capacity and its strategic financial management highlight its strong position in the AI infrastructure market. The company's ability to attract major tech clients and secure significant prepayments underscores the high demand for its services and its potential for sustained success. As the AI industry continues to expand, Nebius is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend, fostering innovation and supporting the technological advancements that drive global progress.
