The Tokyo International Film Festival has announced that acclaimed Australian director Rolf de Heer will serve as the president of its international competition jury for the 39th edition. De Heer's extensive career in filmmaking, marked by a commitment to diverse genres and compelling narratives, positions him as a distinguished leader for this year's panel.

Rolf de Heer, an Australian director, writer, and producer, has dedicated over four decades to the art of cinema. Based in Tasmania, his work spans a wide array of genres and themes, showcasing a remarkable versatility and depth. His filmography includes numerous critically acclaimed works that have earned international recognition.

International Acclaim and Recognition

Among de Heer's notable achievements is his 1993 film, "Bad Boy Bubby," which secured both the Special Jury Prize and the Fipresci Prize at the Venice International Film Festival. Furthermore, four of his cinematic creations have been officially selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, including "Ten Canoes" (2006), which received the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section.

Highlighting Australian Cinema: A World Focus

This year's Tokyo International Film Festival will feature an Australia Spotlight as part of its World Focus lineup, a collaborative effort with the Australian Embassy in Japan. This special segment will include a screening of de Heer's 2022 film, "The Survival of Kindness." This particular film was a competition entry at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival, where it also earned the Fipresci Prize.

He highlighted the privilege of attending the festival and, more specifically, the honor of serving as a juror. He emphasized the rare chance to view fifteen films on the big screen and to discuss them with fellow filmmakers, a luxury often unavailable to busy directors.

Hisamatsu Takeo, the festival director of TIFF, conveyed his delight in welcoming de Heer as the jury president. He eagerly anticipates the fresh perspectives and profound insights that de Heer's experience will bring to the competition's diverse selection of films.

A Prolific Creator: Crafting Narratives Across Mediums

De Heer's professional journey began at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Since then, he has authored or co-authored 14 screenplays that have been brought to the big screen as feature films. His directorial portfolio boasts fifteen and a half features, encompassing various budgets and genres. Additionally, he has produced or co-produced 16 fiction films and 5 documentaries, underscoring his comprehensive involvement in film production.

Memorable Works and Accolades

De Heer's career is dotted with memorable projects such as "Dingo" (1991), which featured Colin Friels and jazz legend Miles Davis. His collaboration with Australian Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil began with "The Tracker" (2002) and continued with "Charlie's Country" (2013), a film that earned Gulpilil the best actor award at Cannes. Another significant work, "Alexandra's Project" (2003), saw Helen Buday recognized with a best actress award at the San Sebastian Film Festival after its competition screening at the Berlin Film Festival.

Upcoming Festival Dates and Industry Market

The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival is scheduled to run from October 26 to November 4. Concurrently, TIFFCOM, the festival's industry market, will take place from October 28 to October 30, providing a platform for film professionals to connect and conduct business.
