Scarlett Johansson Attends "Paper Tiger" NYFF Premiere After Missing Cannes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Scarlett Johansson recently made a notable appearance at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) for the premiere of her new film, "Paper Tiger." Her presence was particularly significant as she had been unable to attend the film's initial debut at the Cannes Film Festival due to commitments for another movie. Despite experiencing considerable jet lag from an international flight, Johansson joined her co-stars Adam Driver and Miles Teller, alongside director James Gray, to celebrate the movie's screening and engage with the audience.

Johansson, clearly fatigued yet enthusiastic, humorously remarked on her jet-lagged state, noting the early morning equivalent it felt like for her. This candid admission highlighted the demanding schedule actors often face, balancing multiple projects across different locations. Her absence from Cannes, where "Paper Tiger" first premiered, was attributed to her ongoing work on "The Exorcist: Martyrs."

The film, set in 1986, delves into the story of two brothers, Irwin and Gary Pearl, whose attempt at a quick fortune through a Gowanus Canal cleanup scheme inadvertently entangles them with the Russian mafia. Johansson portrays Linda, the wife of Teller's character. The narrative promises a blend of dramatic intrigue and compelling performances from its stellar cast.

At the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, following the premiere, Johansson, Driver, and Teller participated in a Q&A session. During this discussion, the cast and director spoke warmly of the strong camaraderie they developed while working on the film. Driver emphasized that the positive on-set culture, fostered by Gray, allowed everyone to feel comfortable and free, leading to a mutual admiration among the team. Gray reciprocated these sentiments, describing the set as "nauseatingly lovely," underscoring the harmonious working environment.

Gray, before the screening, offered brief but insightful remarks, drawing a parallel to his film school days where he learned that verbose introductions often preceded subpar films. He also reflected on his journey to becoming a filmmaker, recalling his parents' initial skepticism. Dennis Lim, the NYFF artistic director, lauded Gray as a remarkable American filmmaker, commending his ability to maintain a unique artistic vision in a challenging industry landscape, as evidenced by the film's extensive list of executive producers.

The 64th New York Film Festival, continuing until October 12, features an impressive lineup of world premieres. These include Luca Guadagnino's "Artificial," focusing on OpenAI founder Sam Altman; Ava DuVernay's documentary "14th"; Tony Gilroy's musical drama "Behemoth!" starring Pedro Pascal, Olivia Wilde, and Will Arnett; and Takashi Yamazaki's kaiju sequel "Godzilla Minus Zero." Lim noted that while premiere status is not the sole focus, the festival aims to provide an enriching context for film launches.

Scarlett Johansson's dedication to her craft was evident as she flew in from an international filming location to attend the "Paper Tiger" premiere at the New York Film Festival. This event reunited her with co-stars Adam Driver and Miles Teller, and director James Gray, showcasing the film for the first time in a festival setting for Johansson, who had missed its Cannes debut. The cast highlighted the strong bonds formed during production, emphasizing the collaborative and supportive atmosphere cultivated by Gray, leading to a memorable premiere event and setting the stage for the film's reception.
