Unitree's 'Superman' Robot Achieves Record-Breaking Speed, Outpacing Usain Bolt

Unitree, a prominent robotics company, has recently captivated the technology and financial sectors with two significant developments: the unveiling of its groundbreaking humanoid robot, 'Superman,' which has achieved a speed exceeding that of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, and an overwhelmingly successful initial public offering (IPO) on the Shanghai STAR Market. These concurrent events underscore Unitree's innovative prowess in robotics and its burgeoning financial appeal, signaling a new era of advanced artificial intelligence and automation.

The 'Superman' robot, introduced to the public on a recent Monday, is engineered to reach a remarkable speed of 12.66 meters per second. This figure notably surpasses Usain Bolt's peak speed of 12.42 meters per second, recorded during his world-record-setting sprint in 2009. While Unitree has yet to provide independent verification for this claim, the announcement itself has generated considerable excitement. The robot's design allows it to perform impressive feats, such as a two-meter standing high jump, despite having legs that are only 0.85 meters long. This rapid development, completed by Unitree's engineers in just over three months, aligns with founder Wang Xingxing's earlier prediction that humanoid machines would soon exceed human sprint capabilities, driven by advancements in component affordability and algorithm efficiency.

In parallel with this technological revelation, Unitree's IPO has made waves in the financial market. The company priced its shares at 150.8 yuan, successfully raising approximately 6.1 billion yuan (about $905 million), which effectively values the company at nearly $9 billion. This offering witnessed an extraordinary level of investor interest, with retail subscriptions oversubscribed by an astounding 8,288 times, setting an unprecedented record for the Shanghai STAR Market. This overwhelming demand allowed Unitree to secure significantly more capital than its initial target of 4.2 billion yuan, reflecting immense investor confidence in its future growth and technological leadership.

Despite the impressive market valuation, which places Unitree at roughly 36 times its projected 2025 sales—a multiple considerably higher than its Hong Kong-listed competitor, UBTech, at 18 times—the company's financial performance provides a solid foundation. Unitree reported revenues of 1.7 billion yuan last year, a fourfold increase from 2024, alongside a net profit of 591 million yuan. However, the high price-to-earnings ratio, exceeding 100 times, suggests that investors are factoring in substantial future growth potential, fueled by the company's innovation in embodied artificial intelligence and robotics. The capital raised from the IPO is earmarked for further research and development in embodied AI, enhancing robot designs, and expanding manufacturing capabilities, as Unitree aims to transition its advanced robotic units from research labs and entertainment applications to broader industrial uses.

The simultaneous announcements of the 'Superman' robot's speed record and the record-setting IPO have firmly positioned Unitree at the forefront of the robotics industry. The company's ability to innovate rapidly and attract significant investment highlights the burgeoning interest in intelligent machines. With capital continuously flowing into the machine labor sector, as evidenced by major investments from companies like Tether, NVIDIA, and Elon Musk, Unitree's success could be a harbinger of a future where advanced robotics play an even more critical role in various industries.
