The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has just launched a groundbreaking exhibition, "The Horror Show," inviting visitors into the chilling world of horror cinema. This extensive display delves into the genre's rich history, presenting a captivating collection of costumes, props, and other memorabilia from both classic and contemporary films. The exhibit aims to explore the deep psychological and cultural impact of horror movies on audiences worldwide.

Academy Museum Unveils Extensive Horror Film Exhibition

On September 24, 2026, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles opened its doors to a new, major exhibition titled "The Horror Show." This immersive experience, which curator Jessica Niebel describes as an exploration into why horror films resonate so deeply with audiences, showcases a vast array of cinematic artifacts. From Bela Lugosi's original cape from the 1931 classic "Dracula" to recent costumes from films like "Weapons" and "Midsommar," the exhibit offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of horror.

Museum director Amy Homma highlighted the genre's diverse nature, encompassing everything from vampire sagas and slasher films to psychological thrillers. She emphasized horror's unique cinematic lineage, rooted in literature, culture, and art. The exhibition is thoughtfully organized into thematic chambers, including sections on slashers, religious horror, ghosts, and science fiction. These areas feature interactive elements, such as a coffin for photo opportunities and a chance to take a selfie with Mrs. Bates from "Psycho." For younger or more sensitive visitors, an accompanying exhibit, "Zombies!," provides a less intense alternative.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Academy will host a series of horror film screenings. The program kicks off with a special appearance by Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter for a "Halloween" event, followed by a retrospective of Carpenter's work. This extensive celebration of horror cinema will captivate audiences until its conclusion on July 25, 2027.

This exhibition serves as a compelling reminder of horror's enduring power not only to entertain but also to act as a mirror to our collective fears and anxieties. By providing a secure environment to engage with the unsettling, "The Horror Show" enables us to better understand the societal narratives that shape our deepest dreads, ultimately offering a unique blend of reflection and catharsis.
