Tom Hiddleston, renowned for his portrayal of Loki within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared insights into his enduring role and his latest cinematic endeavor, 'Tenzing,' at the Zurich Film Festival. Hiddleston's reflections span from the early days of the MCU, a period he describes as 'larger than life,' to the profound experience of depicting Edmund Hillary's historic Everest ascent. His narrative highlights the evolution of his iconic character, Loki, and the deep emotional and spiritual connection he forged with the majestic Mount Everest through his new film project.

Hiddleston's initial entry into the Marvel universe as Loki, in the second film of the sprawling franchise, was marked by a significant shift from his prior work with British auteur Joanna Hogg. Despite the vast differences in production scale, Hiddleston noted a thematic continuity: both Hogg's independent films and his role as Loki explored complex family dynamics. He reminisced about the 'extraordinary resources' available within Marvel, a stark contrast to smaller productions, yet he found common ground in the emotional depth of the narratives. His partnership with Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, was immediate and strong, characterized by a mutual excitement for bringing these legendary characters to life for the first time.

During these formative years, Hiddleston engaged in a memorable discussion with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Feige’s foresight regarding Loki’s future beyond the initial 'Thor' film proved pivotal. He outlined Marvel’s ambitious plan: a series of solo films leading to 'The Avengers,' where Loki, mirroring the 1967 comic's antagonist, would be the central villain. This conversation, as Hiddleston recounted, laid the groundwork for his character's extensive arc, a journey he never anticipated would span seven films and two seasons of the 'Loki' series. Hiddleston expressed his deep appreciation for screenwriter Don Payne's work in crafting Loki's intricate backstory, allowing the character to evolve from a villain to someone capable of profound love and family ties.

Beyond his Marvel commitments, Hiddleston discussed his role as Edmund Hillary in Jennifer Peedom’s 'Tenzing.' The film re-examines the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, shifting the focus to Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who accompanied Hillary. Hiddleston's lifelong fascination with Everest, ignited by his experiences skiing in the Alps, drew him to Peedom's unique screenplay. He lauded the film's intention to center Norgay's narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the historic climb. His preparation for the role included a trek to Everest's base camp, an immersive experience that provided both physical and spiritual insight into the mountain's revered status as a goddess rather than merely a peak to be conquered. He believes Hillary shared this profound respect, leading to their extraordinary achievement that forever changed humanity's relationship with Everest.

Tom Hiddleston's dual engagements at the Zurich Film Festival, celebrating both his extensive career as Loki and his newest challenge in 'Tenzing,' underscore his versatility as an actor. His thoughtful reflections reveal a profound connection to his roles, whether navigating the fantastical realms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or confronting the majestic, spiritual realities of Mount Everest. Both narratives highlight the importance of character depth, collaborative spirit, and the enduring impact of storytelling on a global audience.
