Charting New Horizons in Documentary Filmmaking: IDFA Forum's Visionary Approach

IDFA Forum 2026: Embracing Evolution and Diversity in Documentary Storytelling

The 2026 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), scheduled from November 12-22, has officially unveiled the 47 projects chosen for the 34th installment of its IDFA Forum. This prestigious co-production and co-financing market, running from November 15-18, received an impressive 859 submissions, meticulously reviewed by 42 external experts. The selected documentaries, ranging from early development to near completion, will be presented across various sections including Forum Pitches, Roundtable Presentations, Rough Cut Presentations, and the IDFA DocLab Forum, dedicated to new media. Organizers highlight that this year's slate aims to "stretch and reimagine the documentary form, opening new ways of engaging with the world today."

Navigating the Evolving Documentary Landscape: A Strategic Reformat

Recognizing the increasing fragmentation and complexity of the documentary market, IDFA Forum has strategically revamped its presentation formats. This restructuring is intended to facilitate clearer communication of project needs and foster more meaningful engagements with funders, broadcasters, producers, and other collaborators. The goal is to enable potential partners to better understand their role in supporting a film. Projects will now be showcased either to a larger audience during the Forum Pitches or in a more intimate setting through Roundtable Presentations, allowing for in-depth discussions. Both formats will offer access to one-on-one meetings with industry professionals, with co-production and producer-to-producer interactions remaining central to the Forum's objectives.

Championing Courage and Curiosity in Filmmaking

Despite ongoing challenges in both financing and distribution within the documentary sector, Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen, Head of IDFA Industry, emphasized the Forum's commitment to supporting filmmakers who approach their craft with bravery and a spirit of inquiry. "We champion works that surprise, reveal, and embrace complexity," said van Nieuwenhuijzen. The hope is that these diverse projects will reach audiences across various platforms, whether on large screens, smaller devices, through virtual reality headsets, or within immersive installations, demonstrating the breadth and impact of contemporary documentary cinema.

A Global Tapestry of Voices and Perspectives

This year's lineup showcases a rich blend of established and emerging talent, featuring new works from celebrated directors such as Wang Bing, Vitaly Mansky, Rachel Leah Jones, and Liang Zhao. The selection spans five continents, incorporating projects from a wide array of countries including Paraguay, Tunisia, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan, Namibia, and Palestine. This geographical diversity reflects a broad spectrum of production contexts and unique perspectives. Furthermore, IDFA Forum is proud to have achieved gender balance across all formats, underscoring its commitment to wider diversity beyond mere parity, ensuring a rich and inclusive representation of global stories.

Spotlight on Selected Projects: A Glimpse into the Future of Documentary

The IDFA Forum presents a compelling list of projects that promise to captivate and challenge audiences. Highlights from the Forum Pitch and Roundtable Presentations include "Being North Korean" by Roxy Rezvany (United Kingdom), "Jiabiangou" by Wang Bing (France, Hong Kong), "My Father Killed Bourguiba" by Fatma Riahi (Tunisia), and "Odesa.Mama" by Vitaly Mansky (Czech Republic, Latvia). The Rough Cut Presentations feature "Artificial Clouds" by Josefina Buschmann Mardones (Chile, France) and "Camels of the Sea" by Vikram Singh (India). The innovative IDFA DocLab Forum, exploring new media, includes projects like "Artificial (Body) Intuition" by Amit Palgi (Netherlands) and "Time Hunter XR: Colonial Protocols" by Mark Mushiva and Daniel Chein (Germany, Namibia, United States). These projects collectively illustrate the dynamic and evolving nature of documentary filmmaking, addressing a myriad of global issues and human experiences.
