Jia Zhangke's Unknown Pleasures Acquires Chinese Rights for Apichatpong Weerasethakul's 'Jenjira's Magnificent Dream'

Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

Unknown Pleasures Pictures, co-founded by acclaimed filmmaker Jia Zhangke and distributor Tian Qi, has successfully acquired the distribution rights for Apichatpong Weerasethakul's latest cinematic creation, 'Jenjira's Magnificent Dream,' for release in China. This strategic move underscores the company's dedication to enriching the Chinese film landscape with global art-house productions. The announcement comes as Unknown Pleasures continues to expand its portfolio, actively seeking out unique and impactful films from international festivals and beyond.

The acquisition of 'Jenjira's Magnificent Dream' marks another significant step for Unknown Pleasures Pictures, a company that has been steadily building a reputation for championing distinctive international art films. Established in 2025, the distributor, named after Jia's 2002 feature, has a clear mission: to bring a wide array of global cinematic works to Chinese audiences. This includes not only critically acclaimed festival entries but also hidden cinematic treasures that might not have strong international sales backing. Their philosophy is rooted in the belief that a vast population like China's undoubtedly holds an appreciative audience for such diverse storytelling.

Prior to the official launch of Unknown Pleasures, Tian Qi's previous venture successfully distributed Weerasethakul's 'Memoria' in China, which garnered a significant $360,000, representing a third of the film's global box office. This early success instilled confidence in both Jia and Tian, demonstrating the potential for art-house films in the Chinese market. This positive experience laid the groundwork for their current ambitious endeavors.

The company's initial releases include the Italian box office hit 'There's Still Tomorrow,' directed by Paola Cortellesi. Acquired in 2024, the film had its Chinese premiere at the Pingyao International Film Festival and was subsequently released nationwide on International Women's Day, March 8, 2025. It achieved remarkable commercial success, grossing $6 million, fueled by strong critical reviews. Following this, Unknown Pleasures secured four additional titles from the Cannes Film Festival later that same year, showcasing their commitment to a robust and diverse catalog.

Tian Qi articulates the company's founding principle: "The world abounds with extraordinary films, and among China's 1.4 billion people, these films are destined to find their viewers." He emphasizes that not every acquisition is solely driven by profit; the primary goal is to release acquired titles as quickly as possible to share them with the audience. Jia Zhangke echoes this sentiment, stating that while financial stability is important, their core mission is to distribute films they genuinely admire. He believes that from a purely business standpoint, such a venture might not seem viable, yet their passion for cinema drives them forward. Their ambition extends to nurturing and expanding China's burgeoning art-film market, implementing a long-term library strategy to ensure these films remain relevant and accessible for years to come, thereby securing sustainable revenue. Jia passionately argues that truly compelling films, those that deserve wider recognition but might be overlooked, inherently belong in the theatrical experience, lamenting instances where such works are relegated to online platforms.
