The upcoming 31st American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is set to welcome acclaimed actress Kerry Washington as its official ambassador, marking a pivotal moment as the event transitions to Los Angeles. Scheduled for May 20-23, 2027, this move signifies an enhanced commitment to nurturing Black talent within the entertainment industry. Washington's role will involve advocating for emerging storytellers, expanding professional pathways, and fostering a dynamic creative network across both film and television. Her involvement is expected to bring heightened visibility and support to the festival's long-standing dedication to diversity and inclusion.

For three decades, the American Black Film Festival, founded by Jeff Friday in 1997, has been a vital platform for Black artists. Its primary goal has always been to provide a space for connection, inspiration, and invaluable business opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and industry executives. Historically held in Miami, the decision to relocate to Los Angeles for its 31st iteration is a strategic move designed to strengthen its ties with the broader entertainment world. This new chapter promises to offer an even richer array of programming, including film screenings, insightful panel discussions, and diverse industry events, all aimed at deepening the festival's impact.

Jeff Friday, who also serves as CEO of NICE CROWD, ABFF’s live events company, expressed profound enthusiasm for Washington’s ambassadorship. He emphasized that the festival has always prioritized creating an environment where artists feel valued, supported, and intrinsically linked to a larger artistic community. Friday highlighted Washington’s authentic spirit and sense of purpose, noting how her values align seamlessly with the essence of ABFF. Nicole Friday, President of NICE CROWD, further underscored Washington’s genuine connection to the festival and her understanding of its core mission—to create meaningful opportunities for artists and leverage the power of storytelling to unite people. Her previous participation at ABFF in 2024, where she showcased the second season of Hulu’s Unprisoned, further solidifies her commitment to the festival’s objectives. This appointment follows a lineage of distinguished ambassadors, including industry luminaries like Regina King, Halle Berry, and Idris Elba, cementing Washington’s place among influential figures dedicated to promoting Black excellence in cinema.

With Kerry Washington at the helm as ambassador, the American Black Film Festival is poised for a transformative edition in Los Angeles. This strategic shift promises to amplify its mission of empowering Black creators and fostering a more inclusive and representative landscape within the global entertainment sector, offering unparalleled opportunities for connection, growth, and celebration.
