Responsibility in Power: A Filmmaker's Stance

Guadagnino's Perspective on 'Artificial' and Potential Backlash

In his recent film, 'Artificial,' Luca Guadagnino delves into the world of prominent artificial intelligence leaders, including Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Guadagnino, however, has stated he is not apprehensive about any potential negative reactions from these individuals, emphasizing that powerful people carry a deep responsibility to the wider community.

Exploring the OpenAI Drama: A Timely Narrative

The film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, features Andrew Garfield in the role of Sam Altman. It chronicles the dramatic events of 2023, when Altman was briefly removed from and subsequently reinstated at OpenAI. The cast also includes Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder responsible for Altman's initial dismissal, Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, and Ike Barinholtz portraying Elon Musk.

Unwavering Conviction: No Fear of Criticism

When asked by Vulture about concerns regarding the response from those depicted in the film, Guadagnino confidently stated, "I’m not afraid. I think that people that have a lot of power should be very much aware that you must be responsible for the community." He speculated that the subjects might even appreciate the film.

Unsolicited Contact and the Director's Response

Guadagnino disclosed that some individuals portrayed in 'Artificial' made indirect attempts to reach out to him. However, he chose not to engage with them, maintaining a professional distance. Sam Altman has yet to make any public statements concerning the movie.

Navigating Studio Shifts: A Calm Perspective

The film's journey saw it move from Amazon MGM to Neon after Amazon's substantial investment in OpenAI. Guadagnino downplayed the significance of this shift, simply stating his positive relationships with everyone involved at Amazon. He expressed a desire not to dwell on the details of the studio change.

A Pragmatic View on AI: Embracing Change

Guadagnino holds a neutral stance on artificial intelligence itself. While he has no plans to integrate AI into his filmmaking process, he is not an opponent of its development. He describes himself as "secular" regarding technological advancements, embracing change and observing its evolution rather than resisting it. He believes that opposing change is unproductive, advocating instead for a watchful and accepting approac
