Yuasa, celebrated for his distinctive surreal narratives and groundbreaking visual aesthetics in anime, has left an indelible mark on the industry with acclaimed projects such as 'Night is Short, Walk on Girl,' 'Ride Your Wave,' and his directorial debut 'Mind Game.' His film 'Lu Over the Wall' garnered an Annecy award, further cementing his reputation. Beyond feature films, Yuasa has contributed to popular series, directing an episode of 'Adventure Time' and working on Netflix’s 'DEVILMAN Crybaby,' showcasing his versatile talent across diverse animated formats.

The 'Drawn Universes: Visions in Animation' showcase will unfold from November 19 to December 29 at TIFF Lightbox. The program comprises an extensive selection of 17 feature films and four shorts, personally chosen by Yuasa. This eclectic lineup includes iconic works from animation titans such as Katsuhiro Otomo, known for 'AKIRA,' Hayao Miyazaki, Sylvain Chomet, and Rene Laloux. Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to engage in conversations with Yuasa, as he introduces screenings of pivotal films like Richard Williams’ 'The Thief and the Cobbler: A Moment in Time' and Isao Takahata’s 'Anne of Green Gables: Road to Green Gables.' These interactive sessions promise to deepen the audience's appreciation for the curated films and Yuasa's artistic philosophy.

In a statement released by the Toronto Film Festival, Yuasa articulated his curatorial vision, expressing a desire to revisit the films that ignited his own imagination and subsequently influenced his predecessors and succeeding generations of animators. He highlighted the inclusion of foundational masterpieces such as 'Pinocchio' and 'Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro,' alongside visionary works like 'AKIRA,' 'Fantastic Planet,' and 'Toy Story 3,' as well as contemporary classics including 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' and 'Liz and the Blue Bird.' Yuasa emphasized that collectively, these films exemplify boundless creativity, exceptional technical prowess, and unparalleled world-building, underscoring the boundless potential inherent in animated narratives.

Yuasa's professional journey also saw him co-found Science SARU in 2013 with Eunyoung Choi, a studio he departed in 2020. In 2025, he further expanded his creative endeavors by establishing ame pippin Inc., continuing his influential work in the world of animation. The festival's initiative to honor his contributions through this special program underscores his significant impact on global animation.

The Toronto Film Festival is preparing to launch this special series with Paul Grimault’s 'The King and the Mockingbird' on November 19, setting the stage for a month-long celebration of animated cinema.
