A Visionary Filmmaker Takes the Helm at Tokyo

Rolf de Heer: A Career Defined by Innovation

Australian cinematic visionary, Rolf de Heer, is set to preside over the international competition jury at the forthcoming Tokyo International Film Festival. For over forty years, de Heer, based in Tasmania, has crafted a diverse body of work encompassing compelling dramas, sharp black comedies, and politically charged narratives. His distinct approach has cemented his reputation as one of Australia's most original and impactful auteurs.

Honors and Accolades: A Legacy of Excellence

De Heer's filmography boasts numerous prestigious awards, including the Special Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize at Venice for his 1993 cult classic, Bad Boy Bubby. Additionally, four of his films have been featured in the official selection at Cannes, most notably Ten Canoes, which received the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize in 2006, underscoring his consistent critical acclaim.

This film previously garnered the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, showcasing the global impact of Australian storytelling.

Festival Director's Commendation

Takeo Hisamatsu, director of the Tokyo festival, lauded de Heer's profound insights and distinctive filmmaking style. Hisamatsu anticipates that de Heer’s extensive experience will foster dynamic dialogue and fresh discoveries among the diverse selection of films in competition, enriching the festival experience for all involved.
