Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

The recent Finnish Film Affair, a significant event for Nordic cinema, showcased a diverse range of compelling projects, with several films receiving prestigious accolades. Naima Mohamud's 'Halima' garnered the top prize for Best Fiction Project, marking a pivotal moment as the first Finnish feature directed by a Black woman. In other categories, Teenu Niukkanen's 'Sauna Diplomacy' was celebrated as the Best Genre Project, while Emilie Beck's '11 Hours' earned the Best Nordic Film Award. The documentary 'Darkness Counts' by Anna Antsalo also received recognition, underscoring the vibrant and expanding landscape of Finnish and Nordic filmmaking.

Naima Mohamud's film, 'Halima,' is a heartwarming comedy centered on a 10-year-old Somali girl navigating life in Finland during 1998. The jury, comprising industry luminaries such as Jodi Hildebrand, Phoebe Hall, and Fernando Vasquez, praised Mohamud's energetic and authentic vision, noting the film's promise of a captivating lead performance and its unique portrayal of Finland. Produced by It’s Alive Films, known for its artistically bold content, this debut feature is a significant milestone, proudly presented by co-founder Jani Pösö. Mohamud, whose personal experiences inspired the story, refined her craft at esteemed institutions like London Metropolitan University and USC. 'Halima' previously won Best Pitch at the 2024 Haugesund New Nordic Films and is slated for a fall 2027 release.

The awards ceremony at the Helsinki Film Festival's industry gathering also recognized other outstanding works. Emilie Beck's Norwegian suspense drama, '11 Hours,' secured the €3,000 Best Nordic Film Award from the Amos Anderson Fund. Beck, known for Netflix’s 'Royalteen' and TV2 Norway’s 'Escaping Bolivia,' directed this film inspired by real events, recounting the harrowing 11-hour hostage ordeal endured by a daycare director, her staff, and 11 children. The jury was captivated by its portrayal of a complex social narrative through the lens of a thrilling hostage drama. Featuring an impressive Norwegian cast including Ingrid Bolsø Berdal and Jan Gunnar Røise, the film, produced by Fenomen Studios and Maha Film, is set for a domestic release in September 2027.

In the new Best Genre Project category, sponsored by Post Control Helsinki & Angel Films, Teenu Niukkanen’s 'Sauna Diplomacy' received the €2,500 prize. This comedy stood out among eight competing projects in the inaugural Nordic Genre Lab. Jurors Noëmie Devide, Sydney Brumfield, and Espen Auka found the concept to be exceptionally original, entertaining, and commercially viable. Set in 1970, the narrative follows Heikki, a civil servant who hosts a Soviet diplomat at his family's lakeside retreat, leading to a complex interplay of manipulation and power dynamics. Niukkanen described the film as a humorous take on the 'Finlandization' era, promising a witty yet thrilling exploration of standing up against tyranny, with Nordisk Film having already pre-bought the project for Nordic distribution, anticipating a 2028 production start.

The AVEK Best Documentary Award, valued at €3,000, was presented to Anna Antsalo for 'Darkness Counts,' produced by Venla Hellstedt. The jury praised the film for transforming the inherent challenge of darkness in filmmaking into a visually compelling element. Expanding its collaborative efforts, the Finnish Film Affair also distributed four additional industry awards to foster networking and business opportunities. These included the Midpoint Series Consulting Award for Elin Grönblom’s 'Body in the Closet,' the Midpoint Feature Consulting Award for Hedda Mjøn’s 'Big Deal,' the Producers Network Award for Aleksi Delikouras’ 'Babyface,' and the Göteborg Film Festival Award for Josefina Rautiainen’s psycho horror 'Linden Lane 6.' Industry experts Sydney Brumfield and Tonje Hardersen lauded the exceptional quality and diversity of the projects presented, marking a highly successful year for the event.
