Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Cuba has put forward Carlos Larrazabal's "Malecón" as its official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. This significant nomination is accompanied by Movistar Plus's acquisition of the film's streaming rights for Spanish audiences, broadening its reach following successful showings at festivals such as Mar del Plata, Miami, and Havana.

The narrative of "Malecón" centers on Elvis, who re-enters Havana society after a decade-long incarceration. He rekindles a relationship with his childhood love but finds himself entangled in the city's criminal underbelly. The film explores the moral dilemmas Elvis faces as he seeks to finance his departure from Havana, weighing what he must sacrifice in the process.

Filmed entirely in Cuba, "Malecón" is a collaborative work by Larrazabal and Cuban screenwriter Fabián Suárez, developed through the Sundance Collab program. The production features an all-Cuban cast, including César Domínguez, Camila Rodhes, Omar Rolando, and Yordanka Ariosa, along with a dedicated Cuban production team. Producer Inti Herrera from i4films highlighted the team's ambition to create a universally resonant story rooted in local experiences, noting the film's ability to connect with audiences both in Havana and globally through its themes of friendship and difficult life choices. Noteworthy co-producers include acclaimed Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría and experienced producer Flavio Florencio, further solidifying the film's strong Cuban identity and international appeal.

"Malecón" stands as a testament to the power of cinema to transcend borders, offering a poignant reflection on universal human experiences through a distinctly Cuban lens. Its journey from local production to international acclaim underscores the rich storytelling heritage and burgeoning talent within Cuba's film industry, inspiring future generations of filmmakers to share their unique perspectives with the world.
